Let's talk about Pyometra.
My son and daughter in laws dog, Sky, is currently undergoing an emergency operation as she is suffering from Pyometra.
She was rushed to the out of hours vets this morning when her stomach started swelling and she started to pass a vast amount of blood.
Sky is an older girl and in critical condition, but she is receiving the best care.
We are praying that she gets through this and can make a full recovery.
Please don't think it won't happen to your dog.
Pyometra is a severe, life-threatening infection of the uterus that fills the womb with pus. It typically affects unspayed female dogs, usually a few weeks after a season.
Common Signs
Increased thirst and frequent urinationLethargy, weakness, or lack of energyVomiting or loss of appetitePus or bloody discharge from the v***a (in "open" pyometra)Swollen or bloated abdomen (in "closed" pyometra where discharge cannot escape.
Treatment
Emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus and ovaries is the standard and most effective cure.
Intravenous (IV) fluids and antibiotics are required immediately to stabilize the dog and treat shock or sepsis.Prevention is best achieved by spaying female dogs at a young age, which entirely eliminates the risk of this condition.
