Sometimes, 'quiet structure' takes a back seat to the pure, messy joy of being a dog. Balanced training knows exactly when to reinforce the strict rules and when to just let them go full monster-mode with a hose (after they've earned it, of course!). This is the 'balanced' part of my job description: 10% strict obedience, 90% washing slobber off my lens. 😂🐾

The Many Faces of a 'Sit-Stay' 🐾

Working Spaniels have TWO gears: 🚀 ZOOM! and 😴 OFF.

Getting them to sit still for a photo is a special kind of endurance sport. 😅 For this lovely working Cocker, it was a high-stakes battle between obedience and the absolute certainty that something more exciting was happening just out of frame.

Here’s the breakdown of our high-intensity, sun-lounger modelling session:

1. The Anticipation
"Okay, I’m sitting on the chair. Now what? Is this it? Is this the job?"

2. The Serious Focus
The definition of 'Working' Spaniel. The intensity in this gaze is real. (He might have spotted a fly. Or a dust mote.)

3. The Moment of Pure Distraction
"SQUIRREL?! Nope, just a particularly interesting leaf. Back to work." This is the peak "Spaniel Brain" moment. 🤪

4. The Sweet Relief
Session complete! He managed to hold the 'stay,' got a great reward, and now he’s just showing off his modelling skills. ☀️

Balanced training isn't just about big commands—it's about teaching impulse control in everyday life, even when it’s sunny, distractions are high, and the lounger looks really comfortable. It's about letting dogs be dogs (including that goofy distracted phase!) but having the structure and communication to bring them back to focus when it matters.

Great work from this beautiful boy ! Let's hope he didn't charge overtime for his modelling fee.

When a Malinois is on a mission, the tail is a strategic rudder and the ball is life. This is the definition of high-drive engagement! Our job is to bridge that motivation with reliable control. "Unpopular opinion, but someone needs to say it:
​'Force-free' dog training sounds great on Instagram, but in the real world, it is getting dogs euthanized.
​When your dog's drive hits a 10—when they are charging across a busy street after a squirrel or reacting out of pure aggression—a piece of freeze-dried liver is not going to save their life. Motivation only goes so far. At some point, there has to be a clear boundary.
​Using an slip lead or a prong collar isn't 'abuse.' It’s a seatbelt. It is a communication tool that allows high-drive, reactive dogs to actually live normal lives outside of a crate instead of being locked away or put down because 'treat redirection' failed for three years straight.
​Love gets your dog’s attention when they’re calm. Structure, accountability, and proper tools keep them alive when they aren't."
