Update: Years’ Recall Investigation Into Sudden Dry Eye in Dogs
Years, a UK fresh dog food company, issued a precautionary voluntary recall of its fresh meals in August 2026 following reports of dogs developing sudden bilateral dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or KCS). The company has now released the findings of its investigation.
The investigation involved 21,757 individual test results covering 1,129 distinct substances, including ingredients, retained production meals, and meals returned by customers. Testing covered potential causes including veterinary medicines, sulphonamides, pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, tropane alkaloids, nutritional factors, packaging migration, and microbiological contamination. All reported testing categories were classified as “Pass.”
Buckwheat received particular attention. Every batch of buckwheat historically used by Years was tested. Testing included 940 distinct substances, including tropane alkaloids, mycotoxins, pesticides, heavy metals, and fagopyrin. Years reports finding no toxin, contamination, or safety issue.
Manufacturing was also reviewed. The investigation found no evidence of a processing failure, with 1,380 cooking cycles during the investigation period reviewed and thermal processing independently validated.
The report also found that no particular recipe, protein, treat, supplement, or location was over-represented among affected Years customers.
One of the more notable findings was that sudden bilateral dry eye has also been reported in dogs without a history of eating Years food. The investigation report recorded 155 cases in Years-fed dogs and 96 cases in dogs that had never been fed Years, including cases from Finland and Hungary, where Years food is not sold.
However, this does not identify the cause of the condition. The report notes that buckwheat-containing foods appeared relatively frequently among affected dogs in Finland and Hungary, but explicitly states that this is an observation and not evidence of correlation or causation. Environmental exposures, seasonal variation, medications, and other factors remain possible considerations.
Importantly, Years’ current update notes that BrAVO has now received more than 200 reports through its independent UK-wide survey. BrAVO says case validation and data analysis are ongoing and that it is not yet appropriate to provide further breakdown or interpretation of those numbers.
Bottom line: Years’ investigation found no evidence of contamination, toxin, nutritional, packaging, or manufacturing problems in its food and did not identify a link between Years food and the reported cases. However, the underlying cause of the sudden bilateral dry-eye cases remains unresolved, and further investigation is ongoing.
