🐶🔋 What’s your dog’s social battery like?
Just like us, dogs have a social battery and it can fill up and run down depending on how much interaction, excitement and stimulation they’ve had.
My own dogs have a weekly “free time” with a mixture of known friends but they don’t particularly want to participate in this every day.
Being around other dogs can be brilliant for their wellbeing, but more isn’t always better. Dogs often benefit from little and often social interactions, with plenty of opportunities to decompress in between. 🐾
✨ A healthy balance might look like:
🐕 Short, positive interactions with other dogs
🌿 Time to sniff, explore and enjoy their own space
🛏️ Quiet time to rest and switch off
🐶 Spending time with familiar dogs they feel comfortable around
❤️ Having the choice to say “I’ve had enough” and move away
Learning to recognise when your dog’s social battery is getting low can make a huge difference. You might notice they become less interested in playing, seek space, seem tired or overwhelmed, overstimulated / increase in unwanted behaviours or simply want to be left alone.
Socialisation isn’t about making our dogs interact with every dog they meet. It’s about helping them have positive experiences while respecting their individual needs and boundaries.
Sometimes the best thing we can give our dogs is a little bit of doggy company… followed by plenty of time to just be a dog. 🐾💤
