Meet a major worker of Carebara diversa, the Marauder Ant. Majors grow up to 15 mm, while their minor sisters are just 1.3 to 2.5 mm. One colony, two extremes, and some of the most striking polymorphism in the ant world.

Yellow carpenter ant queens raising their first brood 🐜💛

Camponotus fedtschenkoi comes from the steppes of Central Asia. Each queen starts her colony alone and needs no food until her first workers hatch. Egg to worker takes 4–6 weeks.

Minors are pale yellow. Majors arrive later with a glossy black head. Around 500 workers by year three.

Dinner time for our Asian Marauder Ants 🦗🐜

Carebara diversa is one of the most extraordinary species we've ever kept. Tiny 1.3mm minors find the prey, then majors up to 15mm move in with the final blows, all in one colony. We started ours in 2019 with just 50 workers. A year later there were over 5,000.

Painful bite, no sting, and definitely not one for beginners. But what a colony to watch.
