I was absolutely delighted to be asked to sit on a panel for Staffordshire county council’s Staffordshire Chamber of commerce ‘Dragons Den’ style ‘Ignite’ Pitch Challenge Event.

This was a fantastic inter-school and inter-college event, held in the gorgeous County Buildings, which saw further education and secondary school students pitch their business ideas to us, the panel.
All students had clearly put a huge amount of work in to develop their ideas and produce incredible business pitches.

It was very difficult to choose a winner and runner up due to the detail students had put into their work, which really showed, but choose we did.
A wonderful and encouraging event that, hopefully, will help young people to think outside the box about their glowing futures.

What a lovely day today with Suzie Fletcher and Julie, visiting some fantastic businesses in Walsall! 🥰

We were made so welcome everywhere we went, and everyone was incredibly generous with their time. These are businesses and people I’ve known and worked with for many years — one for around 25 years! There are some truly wonderful, highly skilled craftspeople tucked away in Walsall.

Days like today really do give you hope. We still have some fabulous manufacturers producing exceptionally high-quality goods right here in the UK — and Walsall certainly has more than its fair share! 🇬🇧🙌

First up was Saddlery Trade Services — thank you so much for everything today.

Then a visit to Birchwood Trees to see Adam Cook and his team and watch how their trees are made. It’s always fascinating to see the skill and work that goes into something most people never get to see.

Next, we headed over to Ian Cousins and Ann Hartland at Yansport, where the factory produces beautiful, high-quality outerwear and PPE. It was wonderful to see British manufacturing doing so well. 👏

And last, but definitely not least, we visited two brothers known around town as “The Chuckle Brothers” 😂 — Dave and Bri Davies, along with Geoff Allen. We also met ‘The Saturday night Weaver’. You simply can’t visit them without leaving with a huge smile on your face. Craftsmen through and through, with plenty of laughs thrown in!

What a fantastic trip and a great reminder of just how much talent, skill and manufacturing we still have right here in the centre of the UK.

These companies supply the trade and, quite frankly, without them we’d be goosed! 😂

There are still plenty more businesses to visit on our next Walsall trip — there just aren’t enough hours in the day!

It’s always a pleasure visiting one of my suppliers, Abbey England Ltd.. 🇬🇧

Honestly, it’s like being a kid in a sweet shop… except my idea of sweets is beautiful British-made hardware, leather and fittings! 😂

There’s something very satisfying about seeing where the materials we use come from and supporting brilliant British suppliers and manufacturers along the way.

Great products, great people… and I usually leave wanting far more than I went in for! 🤦‍♂️😂

Quality is in the detail.

I may not always be the cheapest — but true quality comes at a cost, and more importantly, quality lasts.

For me, craftsmanship isn’t just about the finished piece. It’s about all the small details that go into making it. The things that might not immediately jump out at you, but make all the difference to the finished product and how it stands the test of time.

From staining holes and crew holes, to blocking loops and carefully finishing every edge, nothing is considered “good enough” just because it’s a small detail.

Whether I’m making a basic handmade leather belt or a made-to-measure bridle, the same level of care and attention goes into every piece.

There are quicker ways to do things. There are cheaper ways to do things. But that’s not what my work is about.

It’s about doing the job properly, taking pride in the details and producing something that I’m happy to put my name to — and that you’ll be proud to own and use for years to come.

Because quality isn’t just something you see. It’s something you notice over time.

A bit of a bag repair today 🤩 The leather was old and warn on both sides. It was a matter of replacing them before they went. A much loved and faithful bag to go on for a few more years.

Expect another wonderfully relaxed, entertaining evening as these two saddlers get together for a good old natter about life, leather, saddlery and the industry they love — sharing stories, answering your questions and, knowing these two, probably heading off on a few unexpected tangents along the way! 😂

There’ll be plenty of laughs, plenty of stories and much, much more.

If you came to the last one, you’ll know why we’re so excited. And if you missed it… this is your second chance! As with before, this will also be a live-streamed event, so if you can’t attend in person you can still attained!
