Very occasionally and usually from those unaware of what running a dog daycare business entails, dog daycare providers hear the words “dog daycare is expensive”…

Ahem… Bella here, reporting live from Paws4fun, where apparently nobody can behave themselves. Here’s today’s pack gossip…
🏃‍♀️ DARCY has become Personal Trainer to Bobby, motivating him to keep up with the pack on today’s walk. “Come on, Bobby, legs moving!” She’s one whistle away from starting boot camp.
☀️ MELVIN has secured the BEST SUNBED and evicted everyone else from the prime spot. Apparently this sun patch is his and we are merely guests. 😎
🤼‍♀️ WINNIE has been wrestling with me, Bella, this morning and her REAR NAKED CHOKE is getting worryingly good! I may need to check the small print on my daycare contract. 😂
🐶🐶🐶 OBI & TEDD have welcomed SUNNY into their brotherhood. Bonding, wrestling and general lad behaviour are underway. I’m predicting the initiation ceremony will soon become a Netflix documentary. 🎬
👨‍🏫 FINN has been having a cosy chat with Darren about letting the side down at home. Apparently he needs to pull his socks up and be a better boy for Mum & Dad. Finn listened carefully… whether he takes notice is another matter. 👀
🛋️ REGGIE & ERNIE have been chilling on the sofa. But don’t be fooled by the innocent faces… they’re clearly plotting their next crime wave. Snacks and sofas are officially under surveillance.
🎉 PEANUT has made a surprise Tuesday appearance and absolutely MADE MELVIN’S DAY… his month… possibly his entire year! I’ve never seen a Dalmatian look quite so pleased. ❤️
👀 SHADOW has been trying desperately to get my attention all morning. Sorry Shadow, I’m currently busy with my new wrestling partner. You’ll have to take a number. 😂
👑 And me? BELLA? Obviously running the entire social operation, supervising relationships, monitoring wrestling matches and gathering exclusive gossip.
Honestly… it’s exhausting being the Chief Gossip Correspondent AND daycare’s most in-demand social coordinator.
Right… I can hear Darren coming.

YOUR DOG ISN’T “IGNORING” YOU. THEY MAY BE TOO AROUSED TO THINK.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in dog training is treating every failure to respond as a training problem.

Sometimes it isn’t.

A dog sees another dog. Their heart rate rises. Their attention locks onto the trigger. Their body becomes tense. Their ability to process information changes.
And the owner says:

“Why won’t he listen? He knows that command.”

Maybe he does.

But knowing a behaviour in your quiet kitchen is very different from being able to perform it when your dog’s nervous system is highly activated.

That’s why, when I’m working with reactivity, I don’t start with obedience.

I start by asking:
“What emotional state is the dog in?”

Behaviour is often the output of an emotional state — not simply a failure to obey.
Research increasingly highlights the importance of considering physiological state and the dog–human relationship alongside observable behaviour. Stress can affect learning and responsiveness, while a trusted human can help dogs regulate their responses.

ONE THING TO TRY TODAY:
Next time your dog doesn’t respond, don’t immediately repeat the cue louder.
Stop.
Create distance from whatever is causing the reaction.
Give your dog time to return to a calmer emotional state.
Then train.

Good behaviour isn’t just about what your dog knows.

It’s about whether they’re emotionally capable of accessing what they know.

That distinction changes everything.

🐾 DOG PSYCHOLOGY | TRAINING THROUGH UNDERSTANDING 🐾
Have you ever wondered why your dog doesn’t seem to hear you when you’re calling them?
Sometimes, it’s not that your dog is ignoring you — you may simply be communicating in the wrong order.
Dogs experience the world very differently from us. When we interact with them, we need to understand how they naturally take in information.
👃 1. NOSE – Scent is incredibly important to dogs and is often their first way of investigating what’s happening around them.
👀 2. EYES – Once engaged, they can begin to focus visually on us and what we’re doing.
👂 3. EARS – Then we can introduce our verbal cue and help them understand what we’re asking.
🐶 THE RECALL EXAMPLE
When teaching a puppy to come, rather than repeatedly shouting “Come! Come! Come!”, try engaging their nose first.
Use the scent of an enticing reward to encourage them towards you. As they move towards your hand, introduce the visual connection and then calmly say:
“Sally, come.”
When Sally follows through, reward her.
With repetition, “Sally, come” begins to become meaningful because it has been paired with a behaviour that has already been rewarding.
This is what we mean by:
TRAINING THROUGH UNDERSTANDING.
The better we understand how our dogs learn and communicate, the better we can communicate with them.
And remember — training isn’t about simply teaching the dog. It’s about teaching the human too. ❤️🐾

⛈️🐶 THUNDERSTORMS & NERVOUS DOGS — HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Thunder and lightning can be genuinely frightening for some dogs. Shaking, panting, pacing, hiding, barking or trying to escape are all signs your dog may be struggling.
Here are some things that can help:
🏠 CREATE A SAFE SPACE
Let your dog choose somewhere comfortable and familiar. Close curtains to reduce flashes and use the TV, radio or background noise to help mask the thunder.
🧀 MAKE IT POSITIVE
If your dog is calm enough to eat or play, offer favourite treats, a chew, lick mat or enrichment toy. Pairing storms with good experiences can help change their emotional response.
🎧 DON’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT STORM
Desensitisation and counter-conditioning can help. Play thunderstorm sounds at a VERY low volume while your dog remains relaxed, pairing them with something they love. Gradually increase the volume over multiple sessions.
⚠️ DON’T FLOOD THEM
Turning the recording up loudly to “get them used to it” can make fear worse. If your dog becomes worried, you’ve gone too far.
❤️ NEVER PUNISH FEAR
Your dog isn’t being naughty — they’re frightened. Don’t tell them off or force them to confront the storm.
🔐 THINK SAFETY
Secure doors, windows and garden access. Frightened dogs can attempt to escape, even if they’ve never done so before. Make sure their microchip details are also up to date.
💊 SEVERE FEAR? SPEAK TO YOUR VET
For some dogs, medication alongside a structured behaviour programme can make a huge difference.

🚨🐾 DAYCARE NEWS ALERT — LIVE FROM PAWS4FUN HQ! 📣
It’s been quite the morning here at Paws4fun UK… and some customers may never forgive us for the early wake-up call! 😂 One of our daycare van tyres was feeling as deflated as a Springer Spaniel who hasn’t had enough attention, so Kwik Fit had to come to the rescue! 🚐🛞
Apologies to all our late risers… but some of us are usually awake at 5am! We promise to let you have a lie-in at the weekend! 😴😂
Thankfully, our very efficient Kwik Fit man saved the day, allowing us to squeeze in an early-morning walk around Stafford Castle before heading off for walk number two at Dudas Wood near Derrington! 🏰🐾
And while all this was happening, our Gossip Desk was working overtime…
💍 FRANKIE & RALPHY ROMANCE ALERT!
The biggest news of the morning is that Frankie and Ralphy are thinking about announcing their engagement! 💕💍
There is, however, one small problem… Frankie wants a bigger dowry! 👀 Poor Ralphy may have to start doing some serious daycare overtime because this girl knows her worth! 😂💰 Meanwhile…
🐾 LESTER is nursing some poorly paws, so today’s walk is being conducted at a sophisticated Bulldog pace. No zoomies required!
💨 TEDD has been far too busy zooming to even notice a full-blown romance developing behind him!
🕵️ MELVIN, Head of Security, subjected the Kwik Fit man to a full background check. We’re pleased to report he passed… eventually. 😂
👀 WOODY & BUZZ have been flirting outrageously with WINNIE, who is making full use of those gorgeous eyelashes. She knows exactly what she’s doing! 😏
🏰 BERTIE has apparently written to the council to bid for Stafford Castle to become our new daycare! His proposal includes unlimited daycare spaces and absolutely no planning permission. 😂
☀️ DUGGIE has been taking advantage of every patch of sunshine between the showers, perfecting the art of the strategic sunbathe.
So, with the tyre crisis resolved, romance blossoming, security checks completed, poorly paws being carefully managed and a potential new castle headquarters in the pipeline. Stay tuned for further developments… especially from Frankie. We’re expecting the dowry negotiations to get messy! 😂💍🐾

We’ve had a quick look through the diary and, before the final few spaces disappear into the great Paws4fun booking abyss, we have a handful of precious daycare slots still available over the next few weeks! 🐶

Some Facebook memories hit a little harder than others. ❤️🐾

This photo popped up today of my beautiful girls, Cassie & Lara, fresh from a visit by the Dial-a-Dog Wash van. Judging by their faces, you’d think I’d committed the ultimate betrayal. 😂 They looked absolutely spotless… but they also looked like they were plotting revenge for making them smell like lavender instead of fox poo!

What they never knew was that they would become the reason Paws4fun UK exists.

Losing them left a hole that will never be filled. After they were gone, I wanted to give something back to the dog world—a world that had given me so much happiness. That idea became a business, and five years later it’s grown into something I could only have dreamed of.

I’d like to think the girls would be incredibly proud… although I suspect they’d also be a little jealous that my every waking moment is now spent with everybody else’s dogs. I can almost hear them saying, “Excuse us… remember who started all this?” ❤️

Not a day goes by that I don’t think about them. I’d give absolutely everything I have just to spend one more minute with them. One more walk. One more cuddle. One more chance to tell them how much they changed my life.

People say dogs are only part of our lives, but for many of us they’re a huge part of who we become.

Everything I’ve built with Paws4fun UK started with two amazing Springer Spaniels who had no idea the impact they would have on my life.

I miss you every single day, girls. Until we meet again. ❤️🌈🐾
