Justice for Gerbils

Justice for Gerbils Gerbils are beautiful little souls full of personality & gorgeousness but are unfortunately very misunderstood.

I've turned my home into a sanctuary & dedicate my life to giving as many as I can a better life & try to educate people about better care.

STUART aged 3-3.5yrs.

A few months ago I noticed something wasn't right. Not only did he start to get a bit less active in the enclosure and sleep more, he had squinty eyes somewhat and on one day had mobility issues as you can see in the video. This subsided massively and I didn't see him like this again.
Nevertheless I administered daily pain relief and monitored as our vet advised.
For a good while he seemed okay again and I only gave him anti-inflammatories when I felt he needed them.
He then started having teeth problems, a spike in his lower tooth that needed rectifying every month or so.
On further investigation at one of his appointments it was discovered he has spinal arthritis (see x-rays in the comments) so we have been managing the pain he'll have been masking being a prey animal. It's a this point we started with stronger pain relief and daily.

On Friday I moved him and his bonded brother Mark to an IKEA Detolf and purposely adapted it to benefit both gerbils. I have a constant cat mat heat pad under half of it they're both enjoying. The position of this enclosure means that it's in a very prominent place and I can care even better for his ever growing needs.
I'm making up easy to eat platters on jar lids and feeding him his meds on baby food, because he loves it. He also loves mummy kisses and regularly crawls into my hand ☺️

He has dramatically gone downhill in the last 24 hrs and he definitely needs to go to heaven in the morning (good job we're already booked in with a SG Tumour removal with another first thing!), but in the meantime he's getting very attentive love and care and I am lingering around his enclosure all day as I was yesterday to ensure he knows I'm here. He's got his brother to snuggle with so that's nice.

Meet ONSLO, aged 2yrs 🤎
Surrendered here today after his brother passed a few days ago.
Reasonably friendly and confident chap who's a cutie, but he's really quite overweight 🫤

In my experience of a few hundred gerbils, the following are healthy weight ranges for gerbils.
This is including small, medium & large builds and long gerbils with 2/3 grammes here or there discrepancy.

Male 70-90g
Female 65-80g

I have had a couple of larger, longer females at mid 80s and a couple more like 61/2g who have been very small in frame, both healthy.
I have also had a few males 65-68g who again have been small framed and a couple of big boys at mid 90s, both healthy.
I am no expert, but I have handled and weighed MANY gerbils on a daily basis for years so am saying that the majority of healthy weight gerbils have all been within stated margins above.

I remember being a little worried about my pretty little Jennifer some time back...she was more of a medium sized gerbil, but weighed what most of my small framed gerbils did, so she saw our vet who didn't think she was underweight at all, just pretty perfect.
I think what's perfect medically would seem skinny to most...it did to me!
I'd prefer for my gerbils to have a few grammes over that and am not strict in that sense so that if and when illness falls, teeth problems occur, they have a couple of grammes to play with.
Saying that, more than 10g over is a considerable amount to them.

The worst I've ever had was around 130g and he just felt awful. He still got around okay surprisingly, but it wasn't nice to see. He was about 45-50g over what he should have been more than half his ideal weight again on top of his little ness 😔

There are a few factors at play in this I believe...
Obvious over feeding/ treats, but it can also be the type of food/ treats. For example, most of the gerbils who have come in severely obese have been fed on Burgess pellets. Now they're not the worst food on the market (they are a bit high in salt if I remember correctly) and I've even been known to mix a bag in to our food tub if donated, but solely these seem to be a common factor in chunkiness.
Obviously another factor is the type of enclosure, bedding depth, wheel etc and play pen/ free roam time.
Some gerbils are naturally more sedimentary than others just like humans. Digging uses up the most energy I think followed by wheel spinning.
Not having food ready there in a bowl and having to forage is also another important factor also for stimulation too, just as new toys and enrichment. All things that can help get them moving.

I estimate ONSLO to be a medium frame-sized gerbil (many are) and should be around 80g. Being 22g overweight is massive!

Not only would his lust for life improve and general activity increase (even if already active), but he would feel better! Just like when we as humans are over what we should be, we can feel sluggish.
Another huge factor is the strain it is having on his tiny heart...I've seen this problem far too many times and it's awful.

The plan is to feed him 1 teaspoon of our regular mix with a teensy treat here and there only, not to diet him.
It would actually be quite dangerous to do this.

I have got some new ingredients for special nutritional plans which I'm making up at the moment so as soon as they're ready I'll incorporate the weight loss one.
I plan to share these foods and plans after I've used them for a while to see if they work.
I know that Lisa Beedham has already started the weight loss one as seems to have had some success.

Update:
His new mum came to collect today and was LOVELY. She's just sent me photos and an update that he's settled in the split 🥰🤗☺️
SEE EXTRA PHOTOS 🖤

It's hard letting go, but it's the best thing I can do for IAN.
Contacted the other day by a lady looking for a friend to bond with her similar-aged 2 and a bit yr old.
He's been here for a few days single and I haven't got a partner for him. It's pretty rare I have singles as with so many things change here day by day and I bond them ASAP.
Over the last couple of evenings we've spent some quality time together.
Following a successful video call home check, today he has a fresh start at a new friendship at the age of 45. If it doesn't work out I'll welcome him back in a jiffy 🖤

GOOD LUCK DARLING

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO REPORTED THE FIRST PAGE.
THAT HAS APPARENTLY BEEN SHUT DOWN. THERE IS NOW HOWEVER A SECOND PAGE WITH A VERY SIMILAR GROUP TITLE ADDING THE WORD "SQUIRREL" 🤣
NOW I HALF LAUGH BECAUSE I THINK IT COULD BE SOMEONE WHO MAY WELL BE THIS DESPERATE FOR ATTENTION. USING MANY OF MY PHOTOS IN PARTICULAR AGAIN SHOWS IT MAY BE ME OR THE PAGE THEY'RE "ATTACKING" AS THEY COULD HAVE USED ANY PHOTOS FROM ANYWHERE. IT COULD ALSO BE SOMEONE TRYING TO SCAM PEOPLE FOR MONEY AND NOT CARING TOO MUCH IF THEY'RE FOUND OUT/ KNOWING FB WON'T DO MUCH.

EITHER WAY REPORT AND CARRY ON REPORTING SUBSEQUENT PAGES (I IMAGINE THIS MAY WELL HAPPEN) IF YOU HAVE THE TIME, BUT PLEASE DONT GIVE IT TOO MUCH THOUGHT.
WHILST I ALWAYS REPORT THINGS THAT ARE WRONG NO MATTER WHAT I THINK THE OUTCOME MAY BE, I DON'T LET IT TAKE OVER.
THEY ARE MOST OBVIOUSLY NOT OKAY AND DON'T DESERVE TOO MUCH OF OUR PRECIOUS TIME AND ATTENTION.
I MUCH PREFER INVESTING IN SHEDDING LIGHT AND KINDNESS ON THE WORLD TO THAT OF TRYING TO FIGHT THE DARK.
I HAVE HOWEVER REPORTED THIS NEW PAGE.

I need your help!!!

😔 I have reported this page as have a couple of other people I know for using my personal photos to scam people, but nothing has been done about it unfortunately 😔

It keeps saying that " the automated system has misunderstood what's going on".
People have fallen for some of their fake rehoming posts and messaged them too, so people could genuinely be getting scammed by whoever this is!
I don't think Facebook cares if accounts steal photos from other people, even if it's with the intention to scam others unfortunately. Plus their system is so inadequate it's not even possible to share details to help them understand, it's just a check boxes exercise 😑

SO....

I ask you to spend a few minutes at least to try and stop these horrid people and report the page!

Here are some of my photos, my babies that have been used 😔

After reporting I commented on some of the photos saying that these darlings were most certainly not for rehoming and was instantly blocked.

It would also be a good idea to share in the gerbil community guys please...
I beg you not to assume others will do it as many will do this.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR PRECIOUS TIME

An evening for updates it seems 😋😋😋

Just had this through .. another pair of girls I bonded here and were adopted a little while back now by a really lovely family.

It warms my heart hearing from people who've given gerbils I have rescued a better life ☺️🤗☺️🤗☺️🤗☺️

I've suggested putting a few more items in the playpen 🙂

I LOVE updates 😍😁☺️🤗🥰

Gorgeous little Francis who i rescued a few months ago and bonded here for a lady I know to scrumptious little Ren.
They live just down the road and are loved SOOOO much ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

31/08/2026

I try to make most of my posts informative in some way or another to spread the knowledge I have gained over the years and potentially help others.
Some are sad, some are cute and others like this isn't the most pleasant, but it's the 3rd time it's happened now 😔.

You'll see Noel's front left paw is all swollen in the video.
Let me firstly tell you that it's already much better than last night when I found him and he's able to use it somewhat now. He'll be okay and he's on anti-inflammatories. If by any chance it doesn't seem to be healing I will send him to our wonderful vet.

My preferred gerbil enclosure has always been an old glass fish tank with a topper (PAH's XL Savic) as pictured in the comments. This is because it permits the entire tank to be for digging magnificent tunnels whilst allowing for a wheel, sand bath, water bottle and hide up top for play and interaction on their terms.
However, due to me housing so many here in my home, I've HAD TO make it easier on myself by purchasing over 60 stackable/connectable BUCATSTATES.

These enclosures are what I needed and I quite like them, but I've found 3 gerbils dangling over the last few months by one front paw in the front door opening.
All I can imagine is that they jump up and get a claw stuck in the opening crack, wiggle in panic and get even more stuck/ injure themselves more.
My goal here is to make people aware of this potential problem not scare anyone.
I also use this to inform you that with broken, swollen limbs, the best thing you can do is remove wheels and climbing objects and give anti-inflammatories prescribed by your vet (any vet could do this) as soon as possible, twice daily.
I am no vet, and would advise getting to one ASAP for this medication in such a case, but if it is Saturday evening, a bank holiday and IF that's just not financially viable etc I would give a small 0.04-5ml drop of children's Calpol to ease pain. Rushing stressed to the vet in such a case is not always the best solution. It's advisable to assess the situation as calmly as possible...they pick up on our anxieties you know!
Anti-inflammatories would be necessary as soon as possible ie. on the Monday morning, as without them the injury cannot heal properly and you're just masking the pain with Paracetamol.
I've had a few people contact me panicked in such cases over the years and have gone through this myself once many years ago on a Saturday night bawling my eyes out on the phone to an emergency vets who had a good chuckle I think 🤔
