Choosing a puppy is exciting. You see that tiny fluffy face, those little paws and suddenly you're mentally bringing them home 😍😍

But one of the biggest things we wish more prospective owners researched before choosing a breed is what life with the ADULT dog actually looks like.

“I’ll leave their coat longer for winter…”

We hear this every year — and while you think it might keep them warmer. It does the opposite.

In fact, winter can be one of the most important times to keep up with regular grooming.

- Wet coats are cold and tangle faster
Rain, mud and damp walks create the perfect conditions for knots and matting — particularly on fluffy, curly and longer coats. These coats stay wet for far longer and actually make your dog feel colder.

- Harnesses & winter coats cause friction
That extra rubbing around the chest, armpits and shoulders can quickly turn small tangles into tight mats.

- Feet still need attention
Hair between the pads can hold onto mud, grit and moisture, while nails continue to grow regardless of the season.

- Skin & coat health doesn't stop for winter
Professional bathing, drying and brushing removes dead coat and debris and gives us the opportunity to keep a close eye on your dog's skin.

- They don't have to be clipped short!
If you'd like your dog's coat kept longer for winter, we can absolutely adapt their style — but a longer coat usually needs more frequent maintenance, not less.

🔥 CONTROVERSIAL GROOMING TOPIC. 🔥

Chow Chows have a reputation in the grooming industry.

And because of that reputation, there are groomers who simply won’t accept the breed at all.

We understand why. Chows are powerful dogs, they can be incredibly strong-willed, and some absolutely can be challenging to groom.

But our opinion?

A breed label shouldn’t decide a dog’s fate before they’ve even walked through the door.

We don’t believe in tarring every Chow with the same brush.

We assess the dog in front of us.
Their body language. Their boundaries. Their previous experiences. Their tolerance of the grooming process.

And this handsome boy is Clyde. 💜

Clyde came to us for his groom and was an absolute angel. His coat is in bad shape as he's been shaved numerous times. His owner wanted him taking shorter for skin health issues, severe ear issues and home grooming maintenance. We would never usually recommend this shortness otherwise.

He had an intensive repair shampoo, deep repair conditioner and a leave in conditioning spray treatment too.

No drama. No scary “Chow” stereotype. Just a lovely boy who deserved someone to give him the opportunity to show us who he was.

Will we groom every dog regardless of behaviour? Of course not. Safety will always come first — for the dog and for our groomers.

But will we refuse an entire breed because of its reputation?

No.

Every dog deserves to be judged as an individual.

And sometimes, the breeds people warn you about turn out to be the biggest sweethearts in the salon. 🐾💜
