STRUCTURE, RULES & BOUNDARIES!
As a dog trainer who spends a large part of my time working with behavioural challenges, this is something I talk about ALL the time, and for good reason!
Dogs thrive when life is predictable, expectations are clear, and we consistently guide them through what is expected of them.
That means providing:
๐พ Structure โ creating predictable routines, helping your dog understand what happens when.
๐พ Rules โ teaching your dog what behaviours are appropriate, what isnโt and when.
๐พ Boundaries โ being consistent about where the lines are and following through with calm, fair guidance.
Dogs don't automatically understand our idea of โrightโ and โwrongโ. They need us to teach them. If the rules constantly change, or expectations are unclear, we can unintentionally create confusion and frustration.
Think clear, consistent and predictable.
Yes means yes. No means no. Do means do. Don't means don't.
This doesnโt mean being harsh, intimidating or constantly correcting your dog. In fact, good structure should create clarity, confidence and calmness. When dogs understand what is expected of them, they don't have to spend their time figuring out the rules for themselves. Often making the 'wrong' choices.
I've recently been working with this little lady and her family, and in a relatively short period of time, we've made some fantastic changes to the dynamics within the home.
The result?
๐ก A calmer household
๐งโโ๏ธ Less stress for everyone
๐ถ Clearer expectations for the dog
โค๏ธ Better communication between dog and owner
โจ An enjoyable pet dog
Behaviour modification isn't always about teaching the dog more commands. Sometimes, the biggest changes come from changing the environment, the communication and the consistency around the dog.
When everyone understands the rules, and everyone sticks to them, things can start to fall into place.
Clear communication creates clarity. Clarity creates calm ๐พ
