Happy International Rabbit Day! 🐇✨
Whether they’re flopping on the rug, zooming around the room, or twitching their noses, rabbits are full of charm and surprising traits. Here are 5 fun facts to celebrate our long-eared friends:

1. They digest their food twice to stay healthy.

Rabbits produce special soft droppings called cecotropes. Because their high-fiber diet is tough to break down, they re-ingest these rich pellets directly to absorb crucial nutrients like B vitamins and protein essential for digestive health.

2. Gastrointestinal Stasis is a medical emergency.

A rabbit’s digestive system must keep moving constantly. If a rabbit stops eating or p**ping for even 12 hours, its gut can slow down or shut down entirely—a life-threatening condition called GI Stasis that requires immediate veterinary care.

3. Fiber is their best medicine.

Over 80% of an adult rabbit’s diet should consist of fresh grass hay (like Timothy or Meadow hay). Fiber keeps their gut flora balanced, prevents hairballs, and physically wears down their continuously growing teeth.

4. They are expert maskers of pain and illness.

As prey animals, wild rabbits evolved to hide any sign of weakness from predators. Domestic rabbits do the same, meaning subtle changes—like sitting in a corner, slight changes in appetite, or minor changes in p**p size—are often the only signs that a rabbit needs medical attention.

5. Spaying and neutering extends their lifespan.

Fixing pet rabbits isn't just about preventing unwanted litters; it carries huge health benefits. Unspayed female rabbits have an extremely high risk—up to 80% as they age—of developing uterine cancer. Desexing eliminates this risk and calms hormonal stress!

🍁 AUTUMN WARNING: Keep your pets safe from seasonal plant dangers! 🐾
As the leaves turn, beautiful autumn plants begin to pop up in gardens and along walk routes—but many of them can be toxic to our four-legged family members.
Here are 6 common autumn plants to watch out for:
Horse Chestnut (Conkers): Highly toxic to dogs. Ingestion can cause severe stomach upset, vomiting, drooling, lethargy, and in serious cases, intestinal blockages.
Fungi (Mushrooms & Toadstools): While some wild mushrooms are harmless, others (like the Death Cap) are deadly. Toxins can cause liver/kidney failure, seizures, or severe gastrointestinal Distress.
Autumn Crocus: Contains colchicine, which is extremely toxic. Symptoms include severe vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, and respiratory failure.
Yew: All parts of the yew tree—especially the red berries and foliage—contain taxine alkaloids. Even small amounts can lead to heart arrhythmias, collapse, or sudden cardiac arrest.
Chrysanthemum: Contains pyrethrins and sesquiterpene lactones. Ingestion typically leads to drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, and skin irritation.
Amaryllis: Frequently kept as indoor or garden autumn blooms. The bulbs are particularly toxic, leading to severe abdominal pain, excessive drooling, tremors, and a sharp drop in blood pressure.
🚨 What to do if you suspect poisoning:
If you think your pet has ingested any part of these plants, do not wait for symptoms to appear. Contact Aldervale Vets immediately for guidance—early treatment can save lives!
Stay vigilant on your autumn walks, keep an eye on curious snouts, and share this post to keep local pets safe! ❤️🐶🐱
