What no one prepared me for being a solo dog walker 🤣. Just a simple… calm… pop in visit I thought as we had a heatwave ☀️but Kevin had other plans… luckily no squirrels were harmed and I can now add “wildlife rescuer” to my CV 😅

Every puppy in this video took a piece of my heart with them 🤍

Fostering puppies is just a small part of what rescue work is all about, in every clip is a puppy who had a difficult start in life, whether they were orphaned, rejected, or abandoned. Knowing that I’m helping in giving these little guys a second chance in life is the most rewarding part of fostering.

People often ask how I can say goodbye and work in rescue because it’s a heartbreaking job 💔

The truth is, you never get used to it, even if you only foster a puppy for a short while. But knowing that puppy now has a chance to have a life with a family that adores them makes it all so worth it 🐾

Rescue has my whole heart 🫶🏼

NO FACES NEAR FACES..
I say this lots as I work with families that need help getting their dog used to children in the household. I give this advice as it can prevent bite incidents.

Dogs often don’t like faces right near theirs as it’s not how they communicate and they can find it confrontational and quite intimidating. Also, if we are going to have an incident and a dog snaps, the last thing we want is a bite to the face 😢

To avoid bite incidents children’s faces should NEVER be near a dogs face- no lying down on the sofa with heads together, no leaning over the dog to kiss them, no toddlers popping up to face height of a dog on a sofa, no toddlers crawling towards dogs on dog beds etc.

If a dog gets worried and tries to use distance increasing behavior- a growl, or even an air snap to ask the child to move away, it’s a huge worry of faces are anywhere near the dogs face. It’s a totally avoidable source of risk.

It’s also good advice for adults too! This photo is just a tiny amount of the blood that came out of my head two years ago as I had an accidental injury from my northern inuit.

I feel asleep with my head on her chest (as I often do, completely ignoring my own advice 😳), as she’s really cuddly and likes it. She woke up and did a huge open mouthed sneeze (she’s quite a dramatic sneezer)… and a canine tooth went into the top of my head. She has humongous canines and it caused a wound in my scalp that poured and poured with blood. My house looked like a crime scene.

Totally accidental, it was just a sneeze, but it could have been even worse. Hurt my head (lots) and also hurt her tooth but it could have been my face. It’s made me really remind my kids not to put their faces right next to the dogs (and my dogs LOVE my kids).

We also model for our kids with our own behaviour and it’s no good us telling out kids not to put their head on the dog if we are doing it ourselves!

So really- NO faces near faces and NO faces exceptions (even for me and I’m trying hard to stick to it!)

I also still startle every time Sylvi sneezes and that’s two years later!

☀️ HEATWAVE REMINDER ☀️

With this lovely weather we’re having, all sessions will be adapted to keep dogs safe and comfortable ☺️

This may mean:
• Training sessions are rescheduled or moved inside
• Shorter walks
• More shaded/sniff-based enrichment sessions
• Earlier/later timings where possible
• Plenty of water breaks & rest

No dog benefits from walks or training sessions outside in unsafe heat, their wellbeing always comes first 💛

Most of my clients know the drill already but for any newbies as soon as it hits around 23 degrees we’re certainly needing to make some adjustments and for our older doggies or brachycephalic breeds we have to take even more caution ☀️

If your dog steals socks, hairbands or even loo roll like Cody here and turns it into a game, this one’s for you! 👀

If you want to see less of this stealing behaviour you need to determine why they are doing it. Are they bored? Lacking mental stimulation? Not getting adequate exercise or interaction from you?

Fulfil that need and then we would want to discourage that behaviour by staying calm and removing our attention each time this occurs. Teaching a “drop” would also be super handy in times like this.

And if all else fails we simply just direct there attention elsewhere like I did here and pick up our stolen goods 🧻😅

Please note this is discussing attention seeking behaviour and not resource guarding, if you feel your dog is stealing items with the purpose of purely guarding them do seek help from a professional 🩵

APPLICATIONS OPEN

Our girls came in as unclaimed strays and went into foster. We named the tri Jack Russell Ida and the Jrt x Chi Hilda. Here’s what their foster mum says about them.

Hilda is a sweet little girl, who loves nothing more than snuggling up on your lap and giving kisses… she loves nothing more than rolling over and laying like a baby, whilst having her tummy rubbed. She sleeps well in a crate at night and will often just take herself off into the crate during the day also for a nap. She is fine being left for around 3-4hrs. She is very food orientated and has a very good appetite. She walks ok on a lead, but seems to prefer a potter around the garden at leisure as opposed to a long walk. Toilet training is ongoing, but with regular garden visits, I have seen very little accidents, she just needs to be encouraged while it’s cold !

Ida is a very cute girl, but quite hand shy, she will approach you with a little smile on her face and tail wagging like crazy for fuss, but is not a fan of being picked up… she is getting much more confident with this, but will need ongoing work to help her overcome her jumpiness…. She loves her food and is very excited at meal times. She sleeps well overnight in her crate and will also take herself off for a nap in there during the day. Happy being left for 3-4hrs max. Toilet training is ongoing, but with encouragement to have regular garden visits, this is improving greatly and feels that the cold is a factor with this at the moment. Ida walks well with a harness and loves a good sniff of everything outside.
