Kona & Lani the Keeshond Therapy Dogs The joy of being a volunteer for Pets As Therapy and our visits to Southampton Gen Hosp & RonMcHse Any negative comments will promptly be removed.

Kona is a a 10 year old Keeshond often referred to as a 'Keesie' in the dog world. She lives with her 8 year old little dog niece named Lani in Southampton and is first and foremost a much loved family pet. From an early age she showed signs of making a perfect therapy dog with her calm nature, lack of jumping up at strangers and no naughty licking which is so important when seeing young and frail

patients. We contacted the www.petsastherapy.org charity late 2015 and she passed the assessment with flying colours. They both now visit Southampton General offering comfort to patients during their stay as well as seeing the children whose parents are staying at the wonderful Ronald McDonald House in Southampton. We are pleased to say that we will be also helping the children at Abbotswood Junior School with their reading and giving regular talks about the charity and the important roles the therapy dogs play in the community. Kona health update..lots of good but some bad.
Just been for annual booster/check up with head vet who has treated Kona since a puppy. Unfortunately Kona’s hearing is down to approx 10% now and chances are it will be lost completely in the very near future as it has deteriorated so quickly so we continue training her with BSL whilst she has a little left. She is showing small signs of canine dementia however this could possibly be linked to anxiety of her hearing loss as well. Good news is she hasn't put on any weight despite no longer going on long walks, her movement has improved big time, her eyesight hasn’t deteriorated like we originally thought, she still has all her teeth which are great condition and all in all Richard was very impressed with her general condition being she is nearly 14 years old. He has suggested we go back to treating her like a puppy regarding the anxiety in the car and try some non prescription medication which might help.
She literally ran into the house after getting out of the car, even had her tail up and she is now playing in the garden, she just loves her home!

Just returned from a short doggie break to Felixstowe. Weather wasn't great but thankfully not heatwave temperatures like the previous week. We managed to get in 2 walks most days and we were lucky enough to be staying a stones throw from the beach front and next to the Landguard Nature Reserve and Fort. Lani walked for miles acting her normal energetic self and Kona took regular breaks being wheeled in her doggie stroller just admiring the views plus enjoying the attention from locals.Other end of the long promenade are pretty gardens its a great place for wheelchair users as very flat and even. Unfortunately despite using relaxing oils and taking regular breaks Kona did not travel well in the car this time, it was a long journey and she has become very anxious since losing her hearing. We have been lucky enough to have visited some great places over the years but now it is time to stay a lot closer to home, next break is back to the IOW which is just across the water from where we live.

Kona had such a fun day today not only did she get lots of affection from all the nurses that dropped in for tea and cake but also received a lovely cuddle from Steph one of her greatest fans who has known Kona for 10 years and works in The Hub. We also stopped off on the way home to visit her brother so she has had a very busy day.
Happy girl indeed but now having a much earned rest after all the excitement!

It’s ‘International Nurses Day’ on Tuesday and Kona is super excited to be part of the event so please pop in for a cudd...

It’s ‘International Nurses Day’ on Tuesday and Kona is super excited to be part of the event so please pop in for a cuddle, she will be there between 12-1. There will be live music, cake, tea and coffee as a small token of appreciation for all the amazing work you do.

Visit to D12 ward before heading off to the Easter Party. Had a fun time as always. Lani insisted on cleaning up the floor after the children, even won a prize in the draw and bought home some yummy goodies to eat. Shame the weather wasn't warmer today but looks like its going to hot up nicely in a few days time.

What a lovely day for a walk down to Bartley River and over the boardwalk to Goatee Beach. Kona walked all the way there but half way home needed a little help. Lani was only on the lead as she spotted a rodent and wanted to go after it 🤦🏻
