Kona & Lani the Keeshond Therapy Dogs

Kona & Lani the Keeshond Therapy Dogs The joy of being a volunteer for Pets As Therapy and our visits to Southampton Gen Hosp & RonMcHse Any negative comments will promptly be removed.

Kona is a a 10 year old Keeshond often referred to as a 'Keesie' in the dog world. She lives with her 8 year old little dog niece named Lani in Southampton and is first and foremost a much loved family pet. From an early age she showed signs of making a perfect therapy dog with her calm nature, lack of jumping up at strangers and no naughty licking which is so important when seeing young and frail

patients. We contacted the www.petsastherapy.org charity late 2015 and she passed the assessment with flying colours. They both now visit Southampton General offering comfort to patients during their stay as well as seeing the children whose parents are staying at the wonderful Ronald McDonald House in Southampton. We are pleased to say that we will be also helping the children at Abbotswood Junior School with their reading and giving regular talks about the charity and the important roles the therapy dogs play in the community. This is a friendly page so please feel free to share your wonderful photos of her visits remembering this is a public page and they can be seen and shared by visitors.

What a wonderful time we had visiting today. First stop was GICU and then on to The PFSH. Lani met so many patients with their families who came in especially to see her. As always such a good girl and she took turns going up to each of them for petting. And just as we were leaving a gent came in and she received a lovely rub behind the ears so we couldn’t resist staying a little longer for this calming end to a very exciting day.

TODAY we have our second Pets As Therapy dog session of the week with Lani! Please see the graphic for details šŸ¾ā¤ļø

Lani had a great time at the summer party today, the theme was ā€˜Sweet as can Bee’ šŸšŸÆ
We popped in GICU afterwards and she was petted by numerous doctors, nurses and patients. It’s been a long day so she is now resting up and fast asleep on the cool tiled floor. Not for long though, her tummy will soon tell her it’s time for tea!!

Thank goodness for the cool of the fan and the wood flooring, both asleep in the hallway. Still no real let up with the ongoing heat here in the UK and more worrying no signs of rain. ā˜¹ļø

Today we have made the sad and difficult decision to retire Kona completely from Pets As Therapy. She will be 14 in a couple of weeks time and volunteering now for 10 years but over the last 12 months her health has deteriorated. She is still a happy girl, great for her age and loving life but now it’s time to let her little niece Lani take over completely. I hope you all enjoy the photo of one of her very first visits and then one of her last. Kona will miss you all but don't worry you will continue to see regular’ Pupdates’ of what she gets up to at home and hopefully on the occasional, short doggie break.

Last Monday we had the pleasure of Steven Wibberley the CEO of Pets As Therapy visiting the hospital to meet a few members of the team for a Q&A session. He had never met a Keeshond before so Lani was happy to pose for a photo! Fortunately the weather was cool that day but we are now heading into yet another heatwave so volunteering on hold again. ā˜¹ļø
