A fantastic post written by Pamela Impackt Behaviour. We have to remember dogs have a mammal brain and that brain is capable of being hard wired wrong! Some genes particularly certain colour genes will be more predisposed to unpredictable behaviour or health problems. Please please research not just the breed but the breeder, the temperament of mum and dad as a minimum.
“No dog is born bad” is still the most damaging myth despite the multitude of proof and information that proves otherwise!
You cannot “love them better”
It’s not “how you raise them”
It’s not “I’ve had 30 years of experience”
It’s badly bred dogs who have been selected to breed for the following reasons…
Money
Colour
Size
Show standard
Anything else that doesn’t put TEMPERAMENT first!
Breeding for greed means people breed from dogs they know are aggressive which can guarantee you that some or all of the puppies will have aggression issues!
If you buy one you can certainly try your best to counter act the genetics but if a dog is severely affected you will always have the aggressive traits come through!
That’s why if there are ANY red flags with the parents you walk away from the puppy purchase!
“We couldn’t meet the mum she was aggressive”
“The dad was there but we weren’t allowed near him”
Are common phrases I hear when assessing a dog with aggression issues and my response is always the same!!!
“You shouldn’t have bought the puppy then!”
What you see in mum and dad comes through to the puppy!
Around 60-80% influence - so if a litter of 10 pups had aggressive parents you’d expect 6 or 8 to be aggressive - although I’m currently dealing with dogs where they’re from large litters and EVERY SINGLE puppy has aggression issues!!
So please don’t think you can be a great owner and have any dog - because we have around only 20-40% influence on the dog with our ownership skills!
