Unfortunately after an unsuccessful reunion I had to remove the babies from their Mum after 24 hours.
Even though she hadn’t injured any of the babies she had failed to feed them or keep them warm. As such the babies were starving and cold and one very swiftly succumbed to the combined effect of both minutes after I removed them from their Mum.
We are down to 3, very small babies. Since removing them they have fed well taking roughly 2mls between the trio every 2-4 hours.
Only one of the babies had any milk inside its tummy. Such a shame that it didn’t work out for them to remain with Mum.
Meanwhile the rescue was rather busy today, we admitted a number of new animals including a hedgehog giving all the classic symptoms of lungworm. Only it was found running out from under the car in the daylight. Upon checking I found she was a female who was heavy weighing 988g. She has signs of birth or imminent birth and so I took her back to the find site and released her.
We admitted another hedgehog who was covered with ticks AND had fleas who also was struggling to breathe. Sadly she is female which means that she could be pregnant, and if so possibly very close to giving birth. Since being in our care her breathing has calmed down and I haven’t seen any babies as yet.
We also admitted 4 baby voles, 1 baby tit, 1 baby jackdaw, 2 baby pigeons and finally a baby crow that I drove by whilst going out to another rescue, it was just sat in the middle of the road beside another squashed crow. When I got out of the car to see what was going on it tried its hardest to get away from me, but ended up on its back unable to right itself, which made for an easy capture.
Everyone has eaten or been fed since their arrival at the rescue and now it’s most animals bedtime.
Attached are some photos to enjoy!
