What's your puppy's recall cue? I bet it's their name or the word come. But I want you to start noticing how many times you use their name throughout the day or call them over and don't make it valuable for them. So try this instead. Chooss a random word that you don't use for anything else and only ever pair it with amazing things.

Don't get me wrong, your puppy can have multiple recall cues, including their name but you'll find the novel word when conditioned correctly will be more effective

Yep that's right. This is indeed a puppy class. In a real life cafe, not just in a village hall.

Puppy training should prepare owners for the real world but sadly so many of them don't. They focus on the basics but the basics don't transition into real life. That's why Pupy Club Solihull is different.

🐶 Did you know the best dogs to socialise your puppy with aren’t necessarily other puppies?

In fact, well-balanced adult dogs can be some of the best teachers for a young puppy. 🐾

A calm, confident adult dog can help teach puppies important lessons about communication, boundaries, appropriate play and how to settle around other dogs.

Puppies learn so much from watching and interacting with experienced dogs — but the key is choosing the right adult dogs. Not every adult dog is comfortable around puppies, and forced interactions can do more harm than good.

How to stop your puppy pulling on the lead

Reward-based training doesn’t mean throwing treats at your dog forever!

Food is a fantastic training tool. We use it to reinforce good choices and build a strong reinforcement history.

We start with a high level of reinforcement, then as the behaviour becomes more reliable, we gradually increase the time between rewards and begin phasing the food out.

The goal isn’t to create a dog that relies on treats.

It’s to build reliable behaviours that become a habit — so your dog can succeed even when there’s no food in your hand. ❤️

A well-socialised puppy isn’t just dog-friendly… they’re comfortable around other animals too! 🐴

These dogs are now older, but they’ve been around horses since they were puppies — and that early exposure has helped them learn how to interact calmly and confidently.

Good socialisation starts young and builds lifelong confidence. And that's why this kind of exposure is all covered in my Puppy Club, for training that goes beyond the classroom and into the real world.

Puppy owners, this is your sign to STOP rushing.

Stop moving.
Stop trying to get somewhere.
Go grab yourself a coffee and let your puppy simply take in the world.

Find somewhere calm, sit down and give them a chew.

Let them watch the people, hear the sounds, sniff the smells and process everything around them without expecting them to do anything.

Sometimes the best training is doing absolutely nothing.

Slow down. Let them observe. Let them learn.

🐶 Teach your puppy to check back in with you — especially when something exciting appears.

When your puppy spots another dog, don’t always wait for them to stop, stare, or pull towards it.

Instead, calmly turn and start moving in the opposite direction.

This teaches your puppy an important lesson:

👉 “When I see something interesting, I should keep an eye on my person — because they might not be following me!”

Over time, you start creating a simple pattern:

Trigger → Check back in with Mum/Dad → Reward → Move on. 🐾

You’re teaching your puppy that seeing another dog doesn’t automatically mean “go over there!”

It means “check in with my human and see what happens next.”

The goal isn’t to make your puppy ignore the world. It’s to help them learn that you are worth checking in with, even when something really exciting is happening. ❤️

Start easy, reward generously, and build it up gradually.

Lead pressure has become a dirty word… but it really shouldn’t be.

Somehow, teaching a dog what to do when they feel pressure on the lead has become controversial. But teaching lead pressure doesn’t mean we need slip leads, tightening collars or harsh corrections. You can teach it using a standard collar and lead.
The lesson is simple:

➡️ Lead goes tight? Move back.
➡️ Lead is loose? Keep moving.

We’re not trying to hurt, scare or punish the dog.

We’re simply teaching them what the sensation of lead pressure means and, more importantly, how to respond to it. Because if a dog learns that when the lead goes tight, they should lean into it and pull harder, you’ve got a game of tug-of-war every time you go for a walk.

Teach them early that pressure means move back towards the handler... simples.

Good training doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to be clear, consistent and fair.
