Tick season and how to remove them🕷
Unfortunately, we are in the middle of flea and tick season so I wanted to post some helpful tips:
1. Ensure your dog is up to date with flea and tick treatment
Tablets from your vet are generally better than spot on for both efficiency as well as safety. Spot ons unfortunately contaminate ecosystems like rivers if your dog swims or during heaving rain and can harm/kill wildlife.
Vets often do Pet clubs where you pay monthly which includes Flea and Tick medication as well as vaccines, discounts of spaying etc. That works out good value.
2. Checking your dogs over regularly.
I recommend checking over your dogs each day when they are calm (but not asleep) for both ticks and grass seeds, particularly paying attention to armpits, groin, base of the tail, ears and toes.
From a puppy, its a good idea to practice checking over your dogs when they are calm, stroking in between toes, ears etc and rewarding to desensitise them to looking for ticks, for the vets, groomers etc. You can still practice this on adult dogs too.
I do always have a quick check over your dogs when dropping them off however, when they're having a belly rub on the sofa later with you is a much more relaxing for them and allows you to be more thorough.
3. Be prepared
Its best to use a tick remover to ensure you don't accidentally leave the ticks head inside the dog. Tick remover tools are no more than £4 usually, its worth having one at home as once you see one you will likley want to remove it quickly. Dogsbody and Friends, Pet Supplies sell them locally.
4. How to remove
Armed with your trusty tick remover, the best way is to slide the tick remover under the tick and turn clockwise until it becomes loose. Make sure you have removed all the tick.
