✨ Handsome Dempsey ✨

Dempsey is currently undergoing rehabilitation and learning a more comfortable, correct way of moving.

His owner, Claire, asked me to assess him for a Quantum Bridle fitting and help find a more suitable bit as part of his overall rehabilitation programme. Just like regular saddle checks, ensuring the correct bit and bridle fit is an essential part of your horse's comfort and performance.

Before his fitting, Dempsey would often retreat to the back of his stable whenever Claire came in with his bridle, and once it was on, he would continue standing at the back.
During the Quantum fitting, something really interesting happened. While I was explaining the benefits of the bridle, Dempsey wandered off and happily stood munching his hay instead of moving away to the back of his stable. Even more telling was what happened when the bridle came off. With his previous bridle, he would frantically rub his face on Claire's shoulder, but with the Quantum, there was no rubbing at all.

Could there be a reason for this?
Quantum’s unique headpiece is the key to clearing the major ligaments and facial nerves. Unlike other designs it is curved away from the TMJ, raised over the Nuchal ligament and clinically removes pressure to the areas of the main nerve clusters on the side of the face, this eliminates pressure to these areas.

For Dempsey, this was another positive step in his rehabilitation journey, and it was wonderful to see such an immediate change in his behaviour.

Today's lesson:

Balloons are far less predictable than horses! πŸŽˆπŸ΄πŸ˜†

I'm helping out at my friend's balloon and party supplies shop while they're away celebrating a family wedding.

Safe to say I'm more comfortable inflating riders' confidence than inflating balloons! 😬

If you're looking for balloons, decorations, and all things party-related, check out their page πŸŽ‰

Rain doesn't stop play when it comes to rehabilitation walking.

Thirty minutes in-hand, twice a day, can feel like a long haul, but it's also one of the best ways to truly connect with your horse.

With plenty of opportunities for grazing, foraging, and stopping to investigate what the other horses have been up to, these walks become so much more than part of a rehab programme. They offer valuable insight into your horse's personality and behaviour.

And honestly? It's also 30 minutes where the phone stays away, the to-do list can wait, and it's just me and my horse. Sometimes that's exactly what both of us need. ❀️🐴

What's something you've learnt about your horse during those quiet moments together? Share in the comments below. πŸ‘‡

I've been thinking a lot about Saturday's visit to Team Tutsham

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone for such a warm welcome. The ladies from my group Making Strides came away inspired, challenged, and full of conversation, which for me is exactly what good education should do.

I've followed Team Tutsham, ABRS+ and the Future Schools Project for quite a while now, so being able to see first-hand what they are doing felt really special. The Future Schools Project, led by equitation science expert Lisa Ashton, is asking some important questions about how we teach, learn and care for our horses, and I truly believe those conversations matter.

The older I get, the more I realise that loving horses isn't just about holding on to tradition. It's about being open-minded enough to learn, adapt and do better when we know better.
Through my coaching, clinics and bit fitting, I spend a lot of time on different yards with different horses and riders. I've been fortunate to meet some incredible people, but I've also seen things that have reinforced my belief that our industry cannot afford to stand still. If we don't continue to evolve, improve welfare standards and embrace evidence-based learning, I genuinely worry that we could lose horse riding as we know it.

What I loved most about Saturday was the environment. There was no judgement, no criticism, no telling people they had been doing things wrong. Just honest conversations, curiosity, learning and a shared desire to give horses the best lives possible.
The ladies made me incredibly proud. Everyone arrived with their own experiences and opinions, but they were willing to listen, ask questions and reflect. That openness is where real change starts.

I came away buzzing with ideas, feeling hopeful and even more passionate about the direction our industry could take if we work together rather than against each other. Once we know better we can do better.

For me, this isn't about being right or wrong. It's about creating a future where horses are understood better, welfare is at the heart of what we do, and the next generation of riders has every opportunity to enjoy horses in a way that society can continue to support and celebrate.

Thank you Team Tutsham, Lisa Ashton, ABRS and everyone involved in the Future Schools Project for starting these conversations and having the courage to lead change.

The ripple effect is already happening, and I'm excited to be part of it. ❀️
