Underrated life hack for living with a reactive dog: practise focus when absolutely nothing is happening!
We often wait until another dog appears, our own dog is already staring, their arousal is climbing… and then we ask them to focus.
But that is the hardest possible moment to suddenly expect the skill.
Instead, build focus into the boring bits.
When you step out of the front door.
When you reach the end of the road.
When you stop at a crossing.
When NOTHING exciting is happening at all.
Those tiny check-ins start to become a habit, so when you do eventually need your dog to reconnect with you around something difficult, you are not asking for a brand-new behaviour in the middle of chaos!
You are asking for something they have practised hundreds of times before.
Practise focus before you need focus.
