Underrated life hack for living with a reactive dog: practise focus when absolutely nothing is happening!

We often wait until another dog appears, our own dog is already staring, their arousal is climbing… and then we ask them to focus.

But that is the hardest possible moment to suddenly expect the skill.

Instead, build focus into the boring bits.
When you step out of the front door.
When you reach the end of the road.
When you stop at a crossing.

When NOTHING exciting is happening at all.

Those tiny check-ins start to become a habit, so when you do eventually need your dog to reconnect with you around something difficult, you are not asking for a brand-new behaviour in the middle of chaos!

You are asking for something they have practised hundreds of times before.

Practise focus before you need focus.

I used to think reactivity was about stopping the reaction, now I see it as helping a dog feel safe enough that the reaction is no longer their only option!

I used to look at the barking, lunging, growling, spinning and think "how do we change this behaviour?"

Now I look at the same dog and ask... what is happening underneath it?

Are they scared?
Frustrated?
Overwhelmed?
Conflicted?
Too aroused to think?

The behaviour is only the bit WE can see but the emotion underneath it is the part that actually NEEDS our attention.

That shift changed the way I work with reactive dogs completely.

I’m far less interested in making a dog look calm for five minutes and I'm much more interested in helping them actually feel calmer.

There is a huge difference between a dog who has stopped reacting because they have been suppressed… and a dog who no longer feels like they need to react in the first place.

That is the kind of change I want for the dogs I work with!

Over the next 6 weeks, we’ll teach your dog how to search for and indicate on a specific scent, while you learn how to understand what they’re doing and build searches together.

And remember, your dog does not need to be perfectly obedient or have any previous scentwork experience!

Reactive dogs already have enough to deal with without us making life harder for them through judgement, pressure, unrealistic expectations or simply not giving them the space they need. and the same goes for the person on the other end of the lead.

Most reactive dog guardians are already planning routes, changing direction, watching their surroundings, trying different training strategies and doing everything they can to help their dog feel safer.

So yes… some of these are a little spicy! 🌶️

But I will always advocate for more understanding, more space, more compassion and more freedom for reactive dogs.

Do you agree?

Does your dog LOVE to sniff? 👃🐾

Maybe every walk involves their nose being glued to the ground.

Maybe they’re constantly investigating bags, boxes and pockets.

Or maybe you’d just love to find a new activity that you can actually enjoy together.

Our next 6-week UK Sniffer Dogs Bronze Scentwork Course starts on Thursday 3rd September at 6pm and it’s one of my favourite ways to give dogs a proper mental workout.

Scentwork gives dogs the freedom to use one of their most incredible natural abilities: their nose.

Over the six weeks, we’ll teach your dog how to search for and indicate on a specific scent, building their skills through fun, structured searches.

And your dog absolutely does not need to be super obedient to take part.

Scentwork can be brilliant for busy dogs, dogs who need more mental stimulation, dogs who lack confidence, dogs who find traditional classes difficult, or simply dogs who LOVE using their nose.

It’s confidence-building, mentally tiring and, most importantly, really good fun for both ends of the lead. 💛

Starts Thursday 3rd September at 6pm BST

If your dog is barking, lunging or growling on walks… do you actually know what to do first???

Because this is where so many owners get stuck... they try more training. More exposure. More treats. More walking. More “getting them used to it”.

But sometimes the very first thing your dog needs is for you to stop adding more pressure.

That’s exactly why I created my FREE guide- The First 3 Things To Do When Your Dog Is Reactive

It’s a simple quick-start guide designed to help you feel calmer, clearer and more in control, without overwhelming you with 25 different things to try.

Inside, I’ll show you:
the first 3 steps I recommend to every reactivity client
how to help calm your dog’s nervous system
how to build a simple routine that creates more emotional safety
how to use a trigger tracker so you can stop guessing
why sometimes the best thing you can do is actually pause the training

Because reactivity is hard enough without feeling like you are constantly doing the wrong thing.

This guide will help you know where to start.

Comment GUIDE below and I’ll send you the link.

This is the lovely Arthur, who is currently on his SAFER® Way journey! 🩷

We are now at the Focus stage, which is all about giving Arthur and his humans practical tools, techniques and strategies they can use when other dogs appear.

Because when you have a dog who struggles around other dogs, it is not enough to simply say “stay calm” and hope for the best... you need to know what to do, where to move, how to support your dog and how to help them stay connected to you before things become too much.

He is doing brilliantly, and I am really looking forward to seeing how he progresses through the next stages!
