This year has been the worst I’ve ever seen for grass seeds because it’s been so dry. Grass seeds are little needle like seeds that work their way into your dog by friction and movement. I think 95% of the dogs I’ve been grooming recently have had a hidden grass seed somewhere on their body. Why is it important to check your dog for grass seeds and remove them immediately? Well these things can actually cause serious harm to your dog. I have seen multiple dogs have surgery, and serious effects from these. I’ve also seen some stories from owners and I’m going to share with you some of the worst ones:
- one travelled into the dogs body, into the lung, caused necrosis, and the dog almost died. Had to have part of the lung removed.
- one travelled into the dogs leg causing a bone infection, it was so bad the vet suggested amputation, but the owner decided to PTS as they thought the dog wouldn’t cope on 3 legs.
- one travelled into their dogs heart.
- they can get into the eyes, ears, nose and genitalia, cause infections and a lot of irritation.
- the photo in the tube, one was removed deep from the dogs ear canal, and the other from the foot.
So this is why it’s important to check every single day. It’s also important to train your dog to accept being checked over especially between the toes.
If you notice your dog shaking their head excessively, pawing at their nose and eyes, licking and biting at their paws/in between their toes, or acting differently than normal always check them over and if in doubt go to your vet for them to check them out.
