👀 What does anxiety look like in your dog? 👀

It isn’t always hiding or visibly shaking.🙈

Panting when they’re not hot, repeatedly checking windows, struggling to settle or suddenly wanting to stay very close to you can all be clues that something is making them uncomfortable. 🪟

Every dog is different, which is why noticing changes in their normal behaviour can be so important.🤔

🐶Would you recognise if your pet was struggling with noise anxiety? 🐱

Some signs are obvious, such as trembling or trying to hide. Others can be easier to dismiss — like panting, pacing, refusing food or becoming destructive. 👅

The important thing is to notice what’s different for your pet. 🐾

If you recognise these behaviours around fireworks, thunder or other loud noises, talk to us about what you’ve noticed. 🌩

Recognising that they’re struggling is the first step from coping to calm. 💜

💨🌪️Windswept and Wonderful! 🌪️💨

It's been a bit windy here in Shrewsbury over this last week but no British weather can keep our clients away (although it may cause havoc with our hair!)😂. The marvellous Maisie came to see Vet Richard last week for a weight check and for her parasite treatment which she thoroughly enjoyed as it was hidden inside squeezy cheese! 🧀

At just 4 months old Maisie will need regular worming tablets until she is 6 months old to prevent any nasty little parasites from invading! After that she can move up to the 3 monthly treatments which are all included in our Pet Health Plan!

🎆Firework season is almost here! 🎇

To us humans fireworks can be magical but for our little friends they can be rather scary!🥺 The bright sudden lights accompanied by a huge sound can be worrying when you don’t understand what’s going on.🙈 So we thought we’d help out by sharing some tips that you can start doing NOW in preparation for firework season. 🎆

⛺️ Establish a safe space for your pet in your home, somewhere easily accessible and comfortable so that they can retreat if they feel the need to hide.

🎇 Desensitisation - An easy at home method is to play firework sounds on your phone or laptop, start quietly to begin with and then over time gradually increase the volume. This gets them used to the sounds of fireworks so it won’t seem as strange when they hear them outside. (If at any point your pet seems distressed please stop.)

🧘‍♀️ Use calming sprays or synthetic plug-in pheromone products - Please contact the practice if you would like more information or to purchase one of these from us.

😌 Nutraceuticals and calming tablets - Please speak to one of our vets if you think this may be the best route for your pet. They typically need to be given in advance so the sooner you speak to our team the better.

☎️ Make sure your pets microchip details are up to date! This should be a priority if any of your details change but here is your friendly reminder. It only takes a few minutes to check and it is the easiest way of us reuniting you and your pet if they ever escape.

🎆 We will be posting throughout the firework season so keep your eyes peeled for handy tips and tricks. Remember, It’s never too early to prepare for fireworks so everyone can enjoy the season stress free! 🎆

🐾The Ultimate Snuggle Pup!🐾

Sometimes when you wake up from an anaesthetic you just need snuggles galore!!💖

🍂Seasonal Dangers 🍂

As we are fast approaching Autumn, we thought we would touch base on some of the most commonly seen season related dangers we see in practice.🍂

🌰 Conkers - They contain a chemical called aesculin which is poisonous to dogs.

🌰 Acorns - These can cause blockages if ingested.

🍄 Wild Mushrooms & Fungi - It is best to consider all wild mushrooms potentially toxic and err on the side of caution by getting veterinary advice.

🚱 Antifreeze - This fluid tastes sweet to animals. A single lick can cause total kidney failure especially in cats.

🍎 Rotten fruit - Fallen fruit ferment on the ground and if ingested can cause ethanol poisoning.

It is always helpful if you can bring with you a photo of the plant/substance (or if safe to do so then the item itself/) so we can try to identify the hazard in order to best treat it. 📸
