🌿 Could this common garden plant have a place in your dog’s supplement cupboard?
Stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, has been used traditionally in herbal practice for generations, and today it is increasingly included in canine supplements for seasonal support, skin health and its naturally occurring plant compounds.
But what might it actually offer our dogs? 👇
🌱 Naturally rich in plant nutrients
Nettle leaves contain polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and other antioxidant compounds that can contribute to nutritional and oxidative support.
🐾 Seasonal skin support
Nettle is traditionally used for dogs prone to seasonal sensitivities, itching and licking. You may see it described as a “natural antihistamine”, but it is important to keep this claim in perspective. We do not currently have good canine clinical evidence showing that oral nettle works like a pharmaceutical antihistamine or treats allergic disease.
🧪 Interesting anti-inflammatory research
There is, however, some fascinating dog-specific laboratory research.
A 2012 study using canine cartilage cells found that nettle leaf extract reduced activation of NF-κB, an important inflammatory signalling pathway, alongside several downstream inflammatory markers.
That gives nettle a biologically plausible anti-inflammatory mechanism, but there is an important distinction:
This was an in-vitro cell study, not a clinical trial in dogs.
So while the science is promising, we cannot say that nettle has been proven to treat arthritis, allergies or itching.

For many dogs, it may be considered as part of a wider, thoughtful approach to:
