Why are flat-faced dogs more at risk in hot weather? ☀️
Breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Shih Tzus are known as brachycephalic breeds. Their shortened skull shape gives them their distinctive appearance, but it can also make it much harder for them to cope in warm weather.
Unlike humans, dogs rely heavily on panting to cool themselves down. Brachycephalic dogs often have narrower airways and can be less efficient at moving air, making it more difficult for them to regulate their body temperature.
This means they are at a significantly higher risk of developing heat-related illness, even on days that may not feel particularly hot.
To help keep your dog safe:
✅ Walk during the coolest parts of the day
✅ Avoid strenuous exercise in warm weather
✅ Ensure constant access to fresh water
✅ Provide plenty of shade and cool resting areas
✅ Never leave your dog in a parked car
It's important to remember that brachycephalic dogs can overheat much more quickly than other breeds, so extra care is needed throughout the summer months.
