🎆 FIREWORK SEASON COUNTDOWN - 3 WEEKS TO GO! 🐾

✨ Make their safe space rewarding! ✨

Now you’ve created a safe den, it’s time to make it somewhere your pet wants to be, not just somewhere to hide🏡

🛏️ Make it cosy - Add comfy bedding, favourite toys and the occasional treat.

🍖 Make it rewarding - Try a LickiMat with a pet-friendly paste or treat to give them something enjoyable to focus on.

🐾 Let them choose - Allow your pet to explore their den in their own time. Never force them inside; you want them to see it as a safe, comfortable space.

🌿 Consider calming support - Products such as ADAPTIL, FELIWAY and Pet Remedy may help some pets feel more relaxed. Options include plug-ins, collars and sprays, depending on the product.

💛 Keep things calm - Stick to your usual routine and reward relaxed behaviour. If your pet reacts to a noise, stay calm and reassuring.

🩺 Worried about your pet? Talk to us early! Some pets may benefit from medication during firework season, but this isn’t suitable for every pet. We can discuss the options and arrange an examination if needed.

We also offer a behavioural service to help you create a plan tailored to your pet’s needs. Find out more on our behaviour page 🐶🐱- https://sheptonvets.com/small-animal/information/behaviour-consultations/

Don’t wait until the fireworks start! A little preparation now can help make firework season less stressful for you and your furry friends🎇❤️

A Closer Look: How Veterinary Endoscopy Helps Us Find and Remove Foreign Bodies 🔎🐾

From grass seeds and unexpected objects in the stomach to a surprising cause of breathing difficulties in a young cat, endoscopy plays an important role in helping us get to the bottom of some unusual cases!

In our latest article, we explore how our specialist endoscopy equipment allows us to investigate internal problems, retrieve foreign bodies and take biopsies - often without the need for more invasive surgery.

We also share the curious case of Pickle, a young cat whose persistent coughing and wheezing turned out to have a rather unexpected cause… 👀🐱

Take a look at the video of Vet Josh removing a plastic disc recently, swallowed by a dog!

Important Rabbit Health Update - RHVD2 ⚠️🐰

Sadly, we have recently received reports of three rabbits passing away suddenly, with symptoms strongly suggestive of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Viral Disease 2 (RHVD2).

RHVD2 is a serious and potentially fatal disease in rabbits. Although we routinely vaccinate rabbits against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease using Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus, there is currently no complete guarantee that this vaccine will protect against the emerging strain.

To provide additional protection, we are taking a precautionary approach at Shepton & Wells Vets and offering the Hipra Yurvac RHD vaccine, which covers this new strain.

Would you like to discuss additional protection for your rabbit?🐇

Please call our practice on 01749 343 955 if you would like to arrange vaccination or have any questions. Our team will be happy to help.

Please share this post with fellow rabbit owners to help spread awareness. 🐰

Firework season countdown - 4 weeks to go
Start planning now!
Its just under 4 weeks until Halloween and sometimes fireworks can start early.

Halloween and firework season can be a stressful time for our pets, but good preparation now can make a big difference🐾

🏠 Create a safe den - Think about where your pet feels safest and most comfortable. Set up a cosy den with their favourite bedding and somewhere they can retreat to when things get noisy.
Covering the den with blankets can also help muffle some of the sounds from outside.
🔎Check their ID - Make sure your pet’s microchip details are up to date and that they are wearing a collar and ID tag. Dogs must wear a collar and ID tag in public by law. It is also a legal requirement in England for cats and dogs to be microchipped.
If your pet were to become frightened and escape, having up-to-date identification makes it much easier to reunite them with you quickly.
🌙 Keep them safely inside - Think ahead about getting your pets into a routine of bringing them indoors before it gets dark and keeping them safely inside when fireworks are likely.

Is your pet frightened by loud noises?
Don’t wait until firework night. If your pet has previously struggled with fireworks or other loud noises, contact the practice early. We can discuss ways to help them feel safer and more settled.
Start preparing now and keep your pets happy and safe this firework season 🐶🐱🐇

Megan’s Story: Recognising Cushing’s Disease in Dogs🐾

Megan’s owner knew that her little terrier wasn’t quite herself. A small wound that wouldn’t heal, increased panting and a change in her appearance prompted our team to look a little closer.

Sometimes, subtle changes in our pets can be signs of something more going on beneath the surface.

Read Megan’s story on our website and discover what we found, how we diagnosed her, and how she’s doing now - https://sheptonvets.com/megans-story-in-dogs/

When Marvin’s neck lump rapidly grew and began affecting his breathing and appetite, there were concerns it could be something serious.

But just days later, the lump burst - revealing an abscess rather than the aggressive mass initially suspected.

After surgery and treatment, Marvin was soon brighter, eating better and enjoying life with his family and their new puppy.🐶

His story is a great reminder that not every lump is what it first appears to be.

A high-flying adventure with a happy ending! 🐱

At just 11 months old, curious Dotty is certainly no stranger to exploring… but one adventure took an unfortunate turn when she fell from an upstairs window.

After arriving at the practice with a painful hind leg, X-rays revealed that Dotty had fractured the end of her femur. She needed surgery the very next morning, with four tiny metal pins carefully placed to stabilise the fracture. 🩻🦴
