Shepton Vets “We care for your pet as we do our own”
Independent - Local - Here for your pets 24/7, 365 days a year🐾

At Shepton Vets we recognise that your pet is a member of the family and strive to treat them as if they were our own. Founded in 1922 we are a well established practice and our team of receptionists, nurses and vets serve the community in a professional and friendly manner. Our purpose built surgery can be found in quiet surroundings in the heart of Shepton Mallet. The surgery has ample parking, a spacious friendly waiting area and a friendly reception team waiting to greet you on your arrival. For your pet we provide modern medical facilities with a fully equipped surgical theatre, X-ray and ultrasound suite, separate kennels and cattery, as well as onsite laboratory and dental equipment. Our clinical team is lead by four experienced vets who have a range of interests that span both medical and surgical disciplines. They are supported by our team of fully qualified and student veterinary nurses who themselves offer consultations to support ongoing treatment plans as well as assisting with behavioural advice. At the practice we want to cater for all of your pet care needs, and so provide 24 hour emergency cover to help you and your pet during those most stressful episodes. We also offer a wide range of products and services through the practice to help keep your pet in the very best of health, and are always happy to give advice on these to tailor them to your specific needs.

We are sponsoring Shepton Mallet Fireworks Display🎆🐾

We know this might seem a little surprising for a veterinary practice, especially when we see first-hand how frightening fireworks can be for our pets and the impact they can have on wildlife.

Our hope is that by supporting one official, well-planned event, we can encourage people to enjoy fireworks together in one place, rather than having lots of unexpected displays going off in gardens and residential areas. This gives pet owners a better chance to plan ahead and help keep their animals safe and settled❤️

We know this is a topic people feel strongly about, and we completely understand those concerns. Our intention is to encourage a more considerate approach that takes our pets, wildlife and neighbours into account.

Preparing our pets is just as important!
In this video, Vet Greg and VCA Leah share why we're supporting the event, along with some practical tips to help keep your pets calm and comfortable during fireworks season🐶🐱🐰

We're also sharing our weekly fireworks countdown, packed with advice to help you prepare in advance, including species-specific checklists for your furry and feathered family members. These can be found on our website - https://sheptonvets.com/small-animal/4-weeks-fireworks-preparation-checklist/

Let's work together to make fireworks season a little less stressful for the animals we love💜

🤍 A little note about collecting your pet’s ashes 🤍

We understand that saying goodbye to a much-loved pet is incredibly difficult, and we want to make every step of this journey as gentle as possible. 🐾

When your pet’s ashes return to us from the crematorium, our lovely reception team will call you to let you know.
When you feel ready to collect them, we will carefully place them in one of our paper bags for you to take home, so that you can open it in your own time, in a place where you feel comfortable and whenever you feel ready 🤍

Every pet leaves pawprints on our hearts, and we feel privileged to have cared for them and to support you during such a difficult time🐾

LESS THAN 2 WEEKS TO GO - PRACTISE YOUR FIREWORK ROUTINE 🎃💥

With firework season getting closer, now is a great time to practise what you’ll do on the night🐾

Exercise during daylight🐕
A good walk and play session earlier in the day can help your dog settle later. Avoid waiting until it’s dark when fireworks may already be starting.

Feed earlier🍽️
A good meal before fireworks begin can help your dog feel content and settled. Try to keep mealtimes as consistent as possible.

Practise the den🏠
Encourage your pet to relax in their safe space while the house is calm. Let them come and go as they please so it becomes a familiar, positive place.

Create a calm environment📺
When fireworks are expected:
• Close the curtains
• Use the TV or radio as background noise
• Keep doors and windows closed
• Keep your pets indoors

For cats🐱
If your cat will be staying indoors, consider providing extra litter trays so they have easy access to the toilet without needing to go outside.

Never take your dog to a fireworks display🚫
The noise, flashes and crowds can be overwhelming and frightening.

The more familiar your routine is before firework night, the better prepared you and your pet will be. Fireworks often start before the 5th of November and can even happen over Halloween so it is better to be prepared early 🐾

From Hunched to Happy: Meet Hattie! 🐾

Sweet little Hattie has been through a lot, from major spinal surgery to ongoing back pain and weakness in her hind legs. Despite it all, she’s a determined little dog who never gives up! 🐶

When Hattie came to us, we explored whether acupuncture could help improve her comfort and mobility. The results? A remarkable improvement!
Just one week later, Hattie was walking in with her tail held high and a much more comfortable posture.✨

Meet Bula, a playful 6-year-old lovebird who gave us quite a scare last week🐦

One morning, Bula’s devoted owners noticed she was putting much more effort into breathing and rushed her in to see vet Greg at our Shepton practice🩺

Bula was admitted for intensive supportive care, including oxygen therapy throughout the day, nebulisation (aerosol treatment), a thorough examination under anaesthetic and full-body X-rays to help investigate what was going on.

She went home with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and initially showed great improvement. Sadly, her breathing began to deteriorate again, so her owners brought her straight back for further care.

After adjusting her medications, providing more nebulisation and another session in the oxygen tent, Bula was well enough to head home once more. 🏡

And the best news? 🎉 Bula has continued to improve and is now back to doing what she does best - playing with all her favourite toys! 🧸

A huge well done to Bula’s wonderful owners for acting so quickly and getting her the help she needed. Birds can hide signs of illness, so any change in breathing should always be taken seriously.

We’re delighted to hear that this little feathered friend is feeling more like herself again! 💚

🎆 FIREWORK SEASON COUNTDOWN - 3 WEEKS TO GO! 🐾

✨ Make their safe space rewarding! ✨

Now you’ve created a safe den, it’s time to make it somewhere your pet wants to be, not just somewhere to hide🏡

🛏️ Make it cosy - Add comfy bedding, favourite toys and the occasional treat.

🍖 Make it rewarding - Try a LickiMat with a pet-friendly paste or treat to give them something enjoyable to focus on.

🐾 Let them choose - Allow your pet to explore their den in their own time. Never force them inside; you want them to see it as a safe, comfortable space.

🌿 Consider calming support - Products such as ADAPTIL, FELIWAY and Pet Remedy may help some pets feel more relaxed. Options include plug-ins, collars and sprays, depending on the product.

💛 Keep things calm - Stick to your usual routine and reward relaxed behaviour. If your pet reacts to a noise, stay calm and reassuring.

🩺 Worried about your pet? Talk to us early! Some pets may benefit from medication during firework season, but this isn’t suitable for every pet. We can discuss the options and arrange an examination if needed.

We also offer a behavioural service to help you create a plan tailored to your pet’s needs. Find out more on our behaviour page on our website🐶🐱- https://sheptonvets.com/small-animal/information/behaviour-consultations/

Don’t wait until the fireworks start! A little preparation now can help make firework season less stressful for you and your furry friends🎇❤️

A Closer Look: How Veterinary Endoscopy Helps Us Find and Remove Foreign Bodies 🔎🐾

From grass seeds and unexpected objects in the stomach to a surprising cause of breathing difficulties in a young cat, endoscopy plays an important role in helping us get to the bottom of some unusual cases!

In our latest article, we explore how our specialist endoscopy equipment allows us to investigate internal problems, retrieve foreign bodies and take biopsies - often without the need for more invasive surgery.

We also share the curious case of Pickle, a young cat whose persistent coughing and wheezing turned out to have a rather unexpected cause… 👀🐱

Take a look at the video of Vet Josh removing a plastic disc recently, swallowed by a dog!

Important Rabbit Health Update - RHVD2 ⚠️🐰

Sadly, we have recently received reports of three rabbits passing away suddenly, with symptoms strongly suggestive of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Viral Disease 2 (RHVD2).

RHVD2 is a serious and potentially fatal disease in rabbits. Although we routinely vaccinate rabbits against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease using Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus, there is currently no complete guarantee that this vaccine will protect against the emerging strain.

To provide additional protection, we are taking a precautionary approach at Shepton & Wells Vets and offering the Hipra Yurvac RHD vaccine, which covers this new strain.

Would you like to discuss additional protection for your rabbit?🐇

Please call our practice on 01749 343 955 if you would like to arrange vaccination or have any questions. Our team will be happy to help.

Please share this post with fellow rabbit owners to help spread awareness. 🐰
