The weather's pretty muggy and today's herd activity can best be described as "horizontal" ☀️🦙

Picasso, Graffiti, Banksy and Gordon have all adopted various lounging positions, while Griffin and Jefe appear to have entered a deep state of relaxation that from a distance can look mildly concerning 😵

Santiago, meanwhile, continues to be Santiago...

Fortunately, all animals are alive, well, and simply conserving energy until it is time for snacks 🌱🦙

We're getting ready for our Open Day on Sunday 28th June and we'd love your help spreading the word. 🦙🌳 Holly Hagg is a small not-for-profit community farm in Sheffield, run with the support of volunteers, and we're delighted to have been recognised as one of Tripadvisor's top 10% of attractions worldwide. Yes, a small community farm run on love and compost is keeping up with the big guys!

But we can’t do it without the help of our friends and supporters so if you've enjoyed visiting us, volunteering, trekking with the alpacas, meeting the animals or simply following our journey, we'd be hugely grateful if you could share this post with friends and family.

Open Day is a chance to meet the alpacas, Jefe the llama, the pigs, sheep, chickens and ducks, explore the farm, enjoy live music, try simple nature-based activities and visit our pop-up craft shop.

Picasso, our youngest, smallest and perkiest alpaca turns One on Saturday 13th June. He was captivating from the start, his brown coat hiding a grey secret and eyes with striking blue streaks. See how shearing day made a new man of him, but still so very gorgeous.

This year Jefe was sheared and we think he looks truly magnificent!🦙❤️
Unlike the alpacas, Jefe was sheared standing up. He was a real gent throughout the process, despite looking somewhat unimpressed by the whole affair.

Llamas are often sheared standing up to reduce stress and the risk of injury. Being larger than alpacas, turning a full-sized llama onto his side can put too much strain on his body and too much stress - on both them and the shearing team. As llamas are usually sheared for comfort rather than fleece production, they don't need a full shear like the alpacas.

Instead, Jefe has been given a lion cut, where the fibre on his torso is removed while his neck and legs are left fluffy or lightly trimmed.

For a future herd leader like Jefe, it's kinder to leave a fuller silhouette so he can continue to use body posture to communicate with the herd. Llamas are particularly fond of standing broadside, puffing out their chests and strutting about to look as large and impressive as possible. Like many prey animals, they often use displays of strength to avoid conflict rather than risk injury.

By leaving Jefe's neck fluffy, he can still look powerful and imposing while staying comfortable through the summer months.

And Jefe does love to show off. But who can blame him looking like that? 🦙🦁
