South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue

South Yorkshire English Springer Spaniel Rescue SYESSR - Registered Charity Number 1068811 Last year we helped 107 dogs find a new family. We also provide support to a number of dogs on our foster scheme.

We aim to care for and re-home as many un-wanted, stray or neglected Springer Spaniels as we can as well as proving advice and support to current owners. Despite our title we willingly help other types of Spaniels plus cover a much larger geographical area and will not base decisions solely on the location of either a dog needing our assistance or a possible home for one of our current dogs. As we

ll as strays dogs come to us for reasons such as;

the "present" is too much trouble
a new baby arriving
their owners splitting up
they are too old to work
their owners working pattern changes
they have a behavioral problem
their owners move house or emigrate
they are found as a stray. or even a new puppy arrives (so the oldie has to go!)

There are many other reasons, too numerous to list but whatever the reason, we care for them and try and find them a suitable new home as soon as possible. Although this is a costly scheme we are very proud of it and it is something that not many rescues have. Dogs which are elderly or have a medical condition are often difficult to find homes for as people are worried about the financial commitment that may be needed. As part of our foster scheme these dogs will be found a permanent home but we will continue to provide financial assistance towards veterinary costs. We currently have around 30 dogs which are part of this scheme, which as you can imagine is a large drain on our funds. SYESSR believe that all Springers deserve to be given every chance to live their full life regardless of their age or disability. Only on veterinary advice and when quality of life is poor is euthanasia considered. This ethos is a costly one and means extra income has to be found to support these dogs.

The lovely Charley & Maverick exploring at the vets. They really are a sweet pair, a little shy but very loving once they decide to say hello 🥰

As you may have seen from our previous post they were found under a bush, filthy and hungry. They were assumed to be mother and son but it appears this is not the case as the vet estimates that they are of a similar age, around a year old (poor babies). So could be littermates, or if from a puppy farm set up maybe pups from different litters brought up together.

We thought Maverick was younger as he still has puppy teeth, however he has his adult teeth too and will likely need his remaining puppy teeth removing.

Charley's eye doesn't appear to be present 😞 but on the plus side doesn't appear to be causing her any pain. She will be having the socket cleaned out and stitched up to avoid further infections in the future.

They were both so brave at the vets and were perfectly well behaved for their examinations, vaccinations and microchipping ❤️

Another step on their way to a new life

Some fabulous names suggested, thank you for all of them. We chose Charley & Maverick as we liked the Top Gun theme and it seemed fitting that Maverick is tiny 😄

We need your help again 🙏

This sweet little pair — we think mum and her son — were found shivering under a bush, filthy, hungry, and absolutely exhausted. As you can see, mum’s eye is very sore and clearly needs some care.

They arrived as “Spaniels”, though while mum may well be Spaniel, we suspect dad might have been something a bit shorter and longer… possibly of the sausage‑shaped variety 😉

They came to us through the stray system and sadly aren’t microchipped, so we have no history for them. Just like Toffee, they don’t even have names yet.

That’s where you come in. What should we call them?

They’re off to the vet for their first check‑up in the morning, and it would be lovely to register them with proper new names for their fresh start.

Thought we would share the new updated neutering guidance. Advice on neutering seems to change all the time and can also be dependent on the health and behaviour of your dog so as well as reading this, you should also listen to what your vet has to say.

New BVA and BSAVA policy position recommends a contextualised approach to neutering dogs, while advice for cats remains unchanged.

I NEED A NAME 🙏

We picked up this gorgeous boy from the stray kennels today. Poor lad, we know absolutely nothing about him (other than the fact he has cherry eye) and he doesn't even have a name 😞

Come on, hit us with your suggestions so that he can start his new life with a new name ❤️

Edited to add
Thank you for all your fabulous suggestions, it was hard to choose but he is now called TOFFEE 🥰

Meet Ginner — a 13 month old gorgeous cocker, goofy, and full of beans! This handsome young lad is bursting with personality and enthusiasm for life. He’s had a slightly unsettled few months, which means some of his training has slipped, but he’s a clever boy who will thrive with structure and consistency.

Ginner is still a bit mouthy, so he’s looking for a home without children. He can also be a little anxious, and he’ll really benefit from calm, confident owners who can help him feel secure and guide him as he grows up. He is responding really well to clicker training while in kennels.

He’s generally sociable with other dogs and has lived with several bi***es before. However, he can be possessive around food and didn’t get on with a male dog in a previous placement, so we feel he’d do best as an only dog or with a friendly female.

Lead walking is a bit of an adventure — he doesn’t pull badly, but straight lines are optional in Ginner’s world! Off‑lead, he’s got pretty good recall for a youngster.

If you’re an experienced spaniel person looking for a dog with spark, spirit, and endless energy, Ginner could be your perfect match.

If you are interested in adopting Ginner please head to our website to complete an application.
