LET’S TALK ABOUT VETS 🤷♀️
We recently put out an appeal for foster space for a cat who was at risk of euthanasia after being handed into a veterinary practice. The response was overwhelming. Most people focused on what mattered most – helping the cat. Thank you to everyone who shared, commented positively, or offered to help.
Unfortunately, there were also some hostile and accusatory comments directed at the veterinary profession. We’d like to offer a little insight into what happens behind the scenes when a vet contacts us for help.
Every cat we have taken from a veterinary practice has already received care before they reach us. Many have been examined, treated for injuries, given medication, neutered, and cared for at the practice’s expense. By the time they ask a rescue for help, they have often already invested significant time, resources, and compassion into that animal.
Many veterinary practices also have strict social media policies, so you rarely see the countless acts of kindness and dedication that happen every day. What you may also not realise is that the veterinary profession is facing an ongoing crisis, with high levels of stress, poor mental health, and difficulties retaining staff.
When you leave hostile comments, please remember that a real person – quite possibly someone who has spent hours caring for that cat – is likely reading them. They deserve kindness, not blame.
Over the years, we’ve worked with many veterinary practices that have gone above and beyond for cats in need. The list we have shared is just the ones we can remember off the top of our heads; there have been many more and we wish we can help every cat they ask us about.
If you’re frustrated by the lack of rescue spaces meaning vets have to start making difficult choices, please consider becoming a foster carer for your local rescue. Every foster home created means another vulnerable cat can be given a chance.
Be part of the solution. Support the people who are trying to help, and together we can save more lives.
