Rescuing a dog can be an incredibly compassionate decision, but compassion alone does not prepare you for what may come home with that dog.
Some owners receive limited or incomplete information about a dogâs history, triggers and behavioural needs. They then discover anxiety, fear, reactivity or aggression only after the dog has entered their household.
This is not an attack on every rescue organisation, and it does not mean rescue dogs cannot become excellent companions.
It means owners need to ask difficult questions, demand honest information and understand the commitment they may be taking on before making an emotional decision.
If the dog is already part of your family, guessing your way through serious behaviour using conflicting advice from the internet can make the situation worse.
Seek professional support, understand what is driving the behaviour and follow a structured plan designed for the dog in front of you.
If you are struggling to control or understand your dog, book a ÂŁ75 Behaviour Breakthrough Assessment with The Canine Alliance.
