We would like to dedicate this post to a member of our Smile/personal family. LILY who's life started as a feral kitten on a scaffolding yard when her mummy and daddy found her and gave her the home she would be loved in for all her life. 23 years later..!! She has had the most wonderful life a cat could ask for and will always be remembered and loved. Rest peacefully now Lily over the rainbow bridge, night god bless x

Hello Smile family!

Many of you come to the cattery and say, 'i'd love a job like this', 'you have the best job in the world ' etc etc. Well now's your chance. We need someone, or a couple of people, to work as a Cattery Assistant (Cat Slave) with us, someone who can double up with us on our busiest days. We also need someone, or two, or three, who can be able to take the reins on quieter days when only 1 of us needs to be on duty. We fondly call ourselves number 1's and number 2's. (Unfortunate associations with that I know, but it's happened!).

We are open 9-11am and 4-6pm every day of the week, 365 days a year. We generally start work, in the busy season, at 8am and 3pm so that we can sort the lovely gifts that our pusscats spend precious time making for us overnight and prepare/serve their meal choices.

Qualifications for the job? You need a PhD in cat loving and cuddling. You need a resilience to the accompanying pong to the above gifts. You need skin as thick as old leather for those times when our lovely pusscats sink their murder mittens in and chomp on our soft hairless skin because they don't know how to swear in English. You need to be patient and calm and open to whatever pusscat needs at any given moment which may change dramatically within a nano second, because they can. You need to just be you and work for our Masters. You need to be able to think on your feet and learn about each pusscat, watch for any signs of unhappiness or illness, identify time for play, time for loves, time for go away and leave me alone and so on. You need to be empathetic towards those older and/or not quite so well pusscats that struggle with their days to day needs. The list is endless. We need all of that and more! Whatever they need they get!

Just be aware it's not all cuddles, snuggles and playtime, it's hard work. Quite physically demanding in most parts with the day to day cleaning, litters, deep cleans, hoovering (which can be a blinking nightmare when pusscat furball x 20 decides it's time to moult, again, for the third time this year) and also the upkeep of the communal areas including the back yard and outside areas. The squirrels and birds are waiting for their treats too!

You also need to be good at dealing with our humans! They all have special needs, even the ones that come in and make out they're not bothered and don't care. These humans are giving us an enormous amount of trust. They want us to be their stand in slaves and love their pusscats. They also don't want us to be their stand in slaves because they get jealous, worry their masters will love you more, that they'll forget them, not want to come home and a million other emotions. All valid. We need humans that can deal with that and reassure, love, care for these cat slaves. Anything that they want they can have, whatever they need they can have, anything. We've never been asked for anything that we can't do, so we need a yes person who wants to help the humans go away and enjoy their holiday. Also someone to support their emotional needs when pusscats are staying with us for other reasons not just times for celebrations and holidays.

We need cover, as a number 1 or 2, mostly in the mornings but afternoons can also be very busy with ins and outs, deep cleans, admin catch up etc etc. We'll talk money as and when but we will pay on a self employed basis, you work the hours, we pay you, you do your own thing for the tax man as you wish. We'll schedule you in advance for days/shifts you can work then we'll mess you around and change them as Furball Doe and every other cat that day has changed their minds. We need flexibility as sometimes the cats slaves need a hand sorting out their comings and goings and we'll always try to help where we can.

There's so much more but a lot of you already know as we're only advertising within our Smile family as such, you know what we do, how we do it and why.

Be in touch, we'd like a couple of new people up and running as soon as possible so that our current slaves can slow down a little. Ideally email, text, WhatsApp, we're too busy to be answering the phone most days. We'll get straight back in touch with you and arrange for you to pop in and have a chat, see what sort of commitments you have and see where you could fit in. Only over 18's please up to 99+!

Message any questions that you have and no don't ask, you can't take any of them home! 😹😻

Understandably a few of you have been asking about the crazy temperatures and how we're coping at the cattery. I've heard there's a further heatwave forecast for mid July. Who knows? But, we are prepared either way. See below some of the things we are doing to keep our beloved puss cats as cool cats!

The single side of the cattery is much cooler as the sun leaves that side early morning. The double side gets the sun from late morning for most of the day
We've moved the full-length curtains moved from the middle of the pens (to keep the heat in) to block the windows as best we can to keep the direct sun out. Saying that we arrive at the cattery to often find a few of the cats go behind them to lay in the direct sunshine! šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜¹

We've got gel cool mats which we place in the bed area with a thin blanket over. These go in the freezer so they last quite well.

We have small mats that are cool to the touch, the cats seem to really like these plus damp towels to sit/lay on if they like.

You may see bags of frozen mixed veg/peas etc that we use in the bed areas. Crazy I know but they're so effective! Frozen and refrozen as needed with a thin blanket over, they love this and it chills the whole bed area.

We're popping ice cubes into their water although a lot of the cats don't drink that much. We've also got refreezable ice cubes that cause some curiosity and interest. Apple bobbing for cats sort of thing.

For feeding we're following your choices as normal but have been adding a little water to their wet food to try and encourage a little more water intake. I've just ordered some water fountains too to see if running water encourages them to drink more. They are due to arrive imminently.

Lickylix are going in the freezer, chicken/salmon ice lollies 🤢.

We've taken the canopies off the top of the pens to release the hot air with a large fan blowing the air through. With the front and back door open, on most days, the cool air does blow through nicely.

We've lined the bed areas with plastic insulating foil to keep the heat in during the cold months and now to try and keep the heat out!

Winter blankets are being swapped with the summer weight blankets, they still provide cover for their little hideouts but will let the hotter air seep out unlike the thick ones.

Unfortunately, alongside the bags of frozen vegetables, it does look like we only need a couple of Yorkshires and a bit of onion gravy and we're ready for Sunday lunch! 😹

There are probably other things I've not noted but that's most of it. We're always open to your thoughts/ideas/suggestions so message away!

So the pusscats are pretty much ok, us however are melting! 😹 A noisy, rattling fan is our only reprieve. If you arrive and we are nowhere to be seen then have a look under the cats beds, we'll be under there hogging the frozen veggies!

As you all know our Smile family pusscats always come first, if there's anything we can do we will, to make sure they are happy and settled in every way. 😻

This is a post, a very long one apologies, from a young woman who has posted on my fb. We currently have one of our Smile pusscats missing from home and I want to make sure nobody falls for this scam.

ā¤ļø Two years without you, Wispa. ā¤ļø
Please read as it gives you an insight to how cruel people are…. Wispa was neutered, chipped, vaccinated, and cared for before anyone starts blaming me. ā¤ļø

It’s been a full 2 years since I last held your tiny little feet and pulled them out of my hair.

Two entire years have gone by, and not a single day passes where I don’t miss the quirky, random things you used to do. I miss the way you always knew when I was having a bad day. Whenever something traumatic had happened and I was upset, you would always come and sit on my lap, as if you somehow knew I needed you.

To everyone else, you were ā€œjust a catā€, and people have often said, ā€œYou can always rescue another one.ā€

But no animal could ever replace you. ā¤ļø

To most people, a soulmate is a human. I don’t believe that at all. Wispa was my fur soulmate.

He was there after I tried to take my own life. He gave me a reason to keep going when I felt I wasn’t enough or that I was completely alone. He helped me get clean. He gave me a reason to get out of bed every day. When I started university, he barely left my side for six months. He even became a stepdad to Twix’s rescue litter.

He loved every person and every animal he met because he truly was a beautiful soul.

Most people don’t know what happened after he disappeared.

On 30th June 2024, Wispa and my ex-girlfriend’s cat, Gus, went outside together like they always did.

That night, only Gus came home.

I completely shut down. I panicked, but I kept telling myself Wispa would come home later. Hours passed. Then twelve hours. Nothing.

The next day I did everything I could. I put up posters, shared Facebook posts, reported his microchip as missing, contacted every vet and rescue I could think of, and searched everywhere I possibly could.

The two weeks that followed were the longest of my life.

I barely slept. I barely ate. Every second of every day was spent searching for him or waiting for my phone to ring with good news. I blamed myself for everything and convinced myself I’d failed him. My mental health completely fell apart. I was so overwhelmed by grief that I started harming myself again because I couldn’t cope with not knowing where he was or whether he was safe. I hated myself every single day that he was missing.

Looking back now, I can see just how vulnerable I was.

Then, two weeks later, I received a phone call from a withheld number.

The man claimed he was from the RSPCA.

I was only 20 years old, completely heartbroken, and desperate to get my boy back.

He read out my full legal name and Wispa’s full microchip number before asking if I was his owner.

Then he said the words I’d been praying to hear.

ā€œHe’s alive.ā€

I can’t describe the relief I felt.

The call was then transferred, with hold music playing, to someone claiming to be from a veterinary practice. They described injuries Wispa supposedly had, the medication he was receiving, and even ear surgery they claimed he’d undergone.

It all sounded real because they had so much information.

Then they told me that because it was a Sunday evening, I needed to pay a £500 release fee before I could bring him home.

I didn’t hesitate.

I told them I didn’t care about the money. I just wanted my cat back.

So I paid it.

The call ended.

I never heard from them again.

To this day, I still don’t know how they had my personal information or Wispa’s microchip details.

People often ask, ā€œHow could someone fall for that?ā€

The answer is simple.

Because grief makes you believe the most bizarre and emotional things.

Because when someone tells you the one little fur love is alive, you don’t stop to question it.

I wasn’t thinking like someone being scammed, I just wanted him home with his mum.

I was thinking like someone who believed they were finally getting their best friend back.

The Ā£500 isn’t what traumatised me, I would have paid Ā£1000000 and sold my limbs I don’t care…

What traumatised me was believing, even if only for a few minutes, that Wispa was alive… only to have that hope ripped away all over again.

I’m sharing this because I don’t want another family to experience what I did.

If your pet ever goes missing and you receive an unexpected phone call claiming they’ve been found, please don’t do what I did. Hang up and call the organisation back using their official number. Contact the veterinary practice directly. Verify everything before sending any money.

These people don’t just steal money.

They steal hope.

They target people at the lowest point in their lives, knowing they would do absolutely anything to bring their family home.

If sharing Wispa’s story stops even one person from going through this, then telling it is worth it.

I miss you every single day, my beautiful boy.

You weren’t ā€œjust a cat.ā€

You were my family.

You were my soulmate.

And you saved my life. ā¤ļø I miss you forever Wispa x
