And so the Peacock has been crowned Britain's favourite Butterfly!🦋🦚👑
It topped the Butterfly Conservation campaign votes to beat 59 other butterflies to the title with the Orange-tip coming a close second and the Red Admiral, Holly Blue and bright yellow Brimstone making up the top 5! 💚🦋

Did your favourite take a top spot?🥳

Who won Britain's Favourite Butterfly where you live? 📍🦋

The flashy Peacock may have taken the UK by storm, but it wasn't a unanimous victory.

The Orange-tip, which came in second overall, clung on to its stronghold in the north of England and Scotland. But the real surprise was the Comma, which came in third in Scotland. This species is a relative newcomer to the country, having expanded its range northwards in recent years.

The popular Holly Blue is another species that has made its way further north, coming in close second behind the Peacock in Northern Ireland.

In Norfolk, the rare and beautiful Swallowtail reigned supreme, while a sudden influx of Painted Ladies won the hearts of the people of Pembrokeshire.

Did your favourite butterfly make it onto the map?

Say hello to Cheese - our latest arrival!🧀🦔
We have some ‘grate’ news to share! After successfully completing his 30-day isolation period and getting a clean bill of health, our cutest new resident is finally ready to meet you - please give a warm welcome to Cheese, our Lesser hedgehog tenrec!

While Cheese might look a bit like a tiny hedgehog with his spiky coat, tenrecs are actually a completely unique group of animals native to Madagascar. Lesser hedgehog tenrecs are known for their curiosity, their sniffing snouts and one of Cheese's absolute favourite hobbies - climbing!

Cheese has officially moved into his new home in the Small Animal House with our resident Mouse lemur family! Look up! While you may think tenrecs stick to the ground, Cheese is semi-arboreal and so is a bit of an acrobat who loves to climb!

Unlike his namesake, Cheese doesn't actually eat cheese! He is an insectivore (or omnivorous) which means his favourite snacks are insects and worms, along with small amounts of fruit and vegetables. 🪱🍎

Cheese is settling in beautifully and so next time you visit keep your eyes peeled on the branches to see if you can spot him and 'say cheese' to Cheese!📸

🦦 Otis’ Journey to a Healthy Smile! 🦷

Our wonderful keepers recently noticed that Otis was only eating on one side of his mouth. Thanks to the strong bond and trust they’ve built with him, they were able to safely get a close-up photo inside his mouth and quickly spotted a problem tooth.

The images were sent to our expert veterinary team, who recommended bringing Otis in for a more thorough examination. Following X-rays, it was confirmed that he had a severely damaged tooth that needed to be removed.

We’re delighted to report that the procedure was a complete success! Otis recovered brilliantly and has now been reunited with his otter companion Kamari ❤️

These photos capture each stage of Otis’ journey—from his health checks and dental treatment to the exceptional care he received every step of the way.

A huge thank you to our dedicated onsite keepers for their vigilance, dedication, and compassionate care, and to Tom and the incredible team at Park Hall Veterinary Centre for their expertise, professionalism, and outstanding support throughout Otis’ treatment.

Thanks to everyone involved, Otis is back to his happy, playful self and enjoying life once again! 🦦💙

🐌 THE GREAT BUG HUNT IS COMPLETE! 🐜✨
At the end of May, our team took part in an epic, team-building bug hunt inside the Butterfly House!
Our staff were on a dusk mission to find leaf-loving snails and stick insects. While we love them too, they do have a massive appetite and love to eat the host plants that our butterflies rely on to breed and feed!🦋

Don't worry, all our finds have gone to good homes: our snails have been safely relocated to our outdoor nature trail and our stick insects are off to join other zoo collections!

The final results are in and our team did a phenomenal job collecting a whopping 537 snails and 276 stick insects! 🏆

Congratulations to our top bug hunters:
👉 Top Snail Hunters: Archie (128!), Amberlea (94), and Fiz (87)
👉 Top Stick Insect Hunters: Bailey (49), Tilly (32), and Lucy (31)

Visiting us soon? Don't worry, there are still plenty of lovely bugs for you to find! Plus you can learn all about them at our Butterflies and Bugs Talk at 10.30am and 2.30pm daily!* 🐌🐛🦋🔍
