“Why did you bury him instead of having him cremated?”
It’s a fair question, and everyone makes the choice that’s right for them. There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye to someone you love. This was simply the choice that felt right for me.
I chose to bury him because I wanted him to have a place in the world that would always be his.
A place where I could go whenever I needed to. Somewhere I could sit in silence, talk to him, cry, smile at the memories, or simply be still. Grief doesn’t follow a timetable, and knowing there’s a place that is forever his brings me a sense of peace that is difficult to put into words.
His resting place has become more than a grave. It has become a place of connection.
I can plant trees and flowers there. I can watch the seasons change, see new life emerge each spring, hear the birds sing, and feel the wind through the leaves. Nature has a remarkable way of reminding us that endings and beginnings often exist side by side.
There’s something deeply comforting about knowing he has become part of that natural cycle. The flowers bloom, the trees grow stronger each year, and life quietly continues. In a way, he continues too—not in the physical sense, but as part of the landscape, the memories, and the love that remains.
When life feels overwhelming, I know exactly where I can find him. I don’t have to imagine a place or wonder where to go. I can simply sit beside him. Sometimes I talk. Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes the silence says everything.
For me, burial wasn’t about holding on to the past. It was about creating a place where love could continue to exist in the present. A place that will always be there, no matter how many years pass.
I understand why others choose cremation, and I respect that completely. Every family grieves differently, and every decision is made with love. This was simply the path that brought me the greatest comfort.
Knowing that he rests beneath open skies, surrounded by growing things, gives me peace. It reminds me that love doesn’t end when life does.
And whenever I need to feel close to him, I know exactly where to go.
