All For Horses Rescue and Rehoming

All For Horses operated by the Animal Hostel Trust (registered charity no 1001513) Our horse rescue and rehoming work began in rented fields in Scarborough.

We are a small registered charity (no. 1001513) that finds good homes for unwanted horses, providing the care, rehabilitation and training they need until they can be rehomed. We’re based on a small farm on the outskirts of Scarborough.

Visitors and helpers are welcome by arrangement; please contact us. Horses found their way to us from various situations, to save them from the meat trade or where owners were no longer able to look after them. Some had suffered physical abuse while some were just unwanted, but all were in need of care, and we started because there was no other rescue centre in the area. Thanks to the Sunshine Memorial Fund, we purchased the farm in Scarborough in 2014. The farm, with its 24 acres of grazing, houses our horses and ponies while they are being retrained or waiting for their new, loving family to find them! Our Aims:
To provide care, rehabilitation and rehoming facilities for abused, unwanted or neglected horses, ponies and donkeys

To provide advice and practical help to people needing to re-home their horse due to financial or other constraints

To actively promote greater knowledge and understanding of the nature of horses, resulting in better welfare, handling, training and treatment

To provide training and work experience to our local community, including disadvantaged or socially excluded people of all ages

We really do need your help at the moment.

We are going through an extremely difficult financial period, and one of the biggest challenges we are facing is simply how much more it now costs us to care for our horses.

Since we were required to move our rescued horses away from the charity's own land, our ongoing running costs have increased significantly.

And these aren't one off bills that we can pay and put behind us. The additional costs keep coming, week after week, month after month.

We are doing everything we reasonably can to bring money in ourselves. Our charity shop, online sales and fundraising activities all help. But with our running costs now so much higher, what we can raise ourselves simply isn't enough.

For more than 30 years, Animal Hostel Trust has been caring for horses and ponies who need us. We want to continue putting our money where it belongs, into giving those horses the care, time and security they need.

So we're asking again.

If you can afford to donate, please help us. £5, £10 or £20 might not seem much against the costs of running a horse rescue, but when enough people give a little, it makes a very real difference.

Still full of life at 27, I’m looking for gentle hacks and plenty of fuss 💛

I’m Indy, a 14.1hh Thoroughbred cross Connemara gelding, and I’m still up for some light hacking. My competition and schooling days are over. These days, I’m looking for gentle rides, plenty of fuss and a caring home.

I love being pampered, I’m easy to catch and good with the vet and farrier. I also love mares, so my new home needs to come with some girlfriends!

I enjoy relaxed hacks, preferably in company, up to an hour two or three times a week. I need a sensitive, balanced, experienced rider weighing no more than 8.5 stone. I can spook or spin, particularly alone, so I wouldn’t suit a novice or nervous rider.

I have PPID, also known as Cushing’s, and take my medication well. I’ve had laminitis in the past, so my weight and grazing need careful management.

I need year-round daily turnout and group turnout. I prefer living out, but I don’t mind short periods of stabling overnight in winter.
I’m available on permanent loan through Animal Hostel Trust. We’re based in Yorkshire, but can sometimes also rehome in the Manchester and North Lincolnshire areas.

I just need the right person to give me a chance 💛

I’m Izzy, a 14hh mare, about 16 years old. I’m looking for a patient, kind person who will take the time to get to know me.

I like people, but I haven’t always been treated well. New faces can worry me, and I can be bargy when I feel unsure. With regular, gentle handling by someone I trust, I’m well behaved and willing to please.

I’m good with the vet and farrier.

I’m unbroken, so I could be your companion or a project for someone experienced in starting horses. Perhaps we could enjoy some quiet hacks in the future, but I wouldn’t suit a competition or jumping home.

I love being part of a herd. I need year-round daily turnout and group turnout, continuing to live out 24/7 with other horses.

Max rider weight: 8 stone.

Look at what I found in the hedge today! Lol my humans seem to love them, they spend ages collecting them out of my mane so I've made sure to bring them a few today.

As it happens, I’m on the lookout for a new human to take over burr removal duties. If you’ve got a hedgerow I can explore too, even better!

🍎 Fancy some home grown apples?

The last of our delicious home grown apples are available now at the Animal Hostel Trust charity shop (91 Falsgrave Rd)

Pop in and pick some up while they last. Once these are gone, that's it for this year's crop!

And, of course, every purchase from our shop helps support the horses in our care.

A productive sight from this summer: our hay is baled and ready!

We will be selling the hay to bring some much needed money into All For Horses. We are doing everything we can to raise funds ourselves, and selling these bales will make a welcome contribution towards our costs.

But even a field full of hay only goes so far.

We still have £38,176 outstanding following our dispute with the North York Moors National Park Authority, as well as the significantly increased ongoing costs of caring for our rescued horses away from the charity's own land.

So yes, selling the hay will help. But it isn't enough. We still urgently need donations.

If you can spare £5, £10, £20 or whatever you can afford, please consider donating. Lots of relatively small donations really do add up, particularly alongside everything we are doing to raise money ourselves.

We have been caring for horses who need us for more than 30 years, and we are determined to keep doing that work.

An update on our situation

We have now been able to pay some of the costs arising from our dispute with the North York Moors National Park Authority, and we have been given extra time to pay the balance.

That extra time is a huge relief. But more time does not mean the problem has gone away.

There is still £38,176 outstanding.

And while we work to meet those costs, the bills do not stop.

Having been required to move our rescued horses away from the charity’s own land, we are now paying significantly more simply to keep them safely housed and properly cared for elsewhere. Those additional costs continue week after week.

Every pound spent meeting these unexpected costs is money that a small charity like ours has to find.

For more than 30 years, All For Horses has taken in horses and ponies who were neglected, mistreated, unwanted or whose owners could no longer care for them.

Some have needed months of rehabilitation. Some have needed years of care. We have never believed that a horse should be rushed simply because helping them takes time or costs money.

We are determined that the work we have built over those 30 years will continue.

The extra time we have been given matters. It gives us an opportunity to tackle this financial burden properly rather than facing the immediate deadline we had before.

But we need to make that time count.

We have some very sad news to share. Our much loved Holly has passed away at the grand old age of 27. ❤️

Holly passed away peacefully in her field one morning, with her beloved Willie close by. Holly had enjoyed a good groom the night before. She simply lay down in the field and quietly passed away.

Holly and Willie met through the charity and became completely inseparable. They formed such a strong pair bond that we came to think of Willie as her husband, and when they went into foster care there was never any question that they would go anywhere without each other.

One of the loveliest things about Holly's final chapter was seeing her grow so close to her foster carers, Jo and Rob.

Holly could be a little aloof at times and sometimes took a while to decide that new people were worthy of her trust and affection. That made it all the more special to see how well she settled with Jo and Rob, and how close to them she became.

They loved her in return, and we couldn't have asked for a better home for Holly and Willie. Jo and Rob have chosen to keep Willie with them on a long term basis, which is a great comfort to us now. He has lost his closest companion, but he remains somewhere familiar, with people he knows and trusts.

There is never an easy way to lose one of our horses, but Holly had 27 years of life and, in the end, she passed away in perhaps the gentlest way we could have hoped for: peacefully, of old age, in her field, with Willie beside her and surrounded by friends and people who loved her.

Sleep well, Holly. You will be very much missed. ❤️
