While on holiday, I couldn’t resist trying to find Hermann’s tortoises in the wild. After a few days of searching, and picking up a fairly painful sunburn in the process, I finally came across my target species. Finding reptiles in their natural habitat is always special and made the time spent searching completely worthwhile.

While enjoying a family holiday in Menorca, Spain, I got itchy feet and couldn’t resist going in search of some local wildlife. After stumbling across a small lake, I was rewarded with the sight of these two beautiful turtles basking peacefully in their natural surroundings. Moments like these are what make exploring so special. 🐢🇪🇸

The first clutch of green tree pythons has started to hatch! 🐍

These babies are from a Biak x Biak pairing, and as you can see, the clutch contains both yellow and red neonates. Why they hatch in these different colours still isn’t fully understood. Some believe the colours help them blend into the lower forest vegetation, while others suggest they mimic flower petals.

My own theory is that their natural predators have very different vision to ours, and these bright colours may actually make the hatchlings incredibly difficult to detect. The truth is we’ll probably never know for certain, and for now, we can only speculate.

Now begins the long but rewarding process of getting these little ones fully established and thriving.

The frilled dragon breeding project is going well this season, with plenty of healthy eggs being produced.

Most frilled dragons will lay between 6 and 10 eggs per clutch, but this female had other ideas and surprised us with a huge clutch of 14 eggs!

The eggs are now safely in the incubator, where they’ll spend the next 12 weeks developing at a steady temperature of around 84°F. With a bit of luck, we’ll have plenty of unrelated hatchlings later this summer.

Masters of camouflage, the Uroplatus lineatus has spent millions of years evolving to disappear into the forests of Madagascar. Its bark-like skin, intricate patterning, and incredible stillness allow it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, making it one of nature’s most remarkable examples of adaptation and survival.

A true masterpiece of evolution and one of the most fascinating geckos found anywhere in the world.

This female anaconda phase emerald tree boa is now going through ovulation, a significant stage in the breeding process.

Ovulation is when mature follicles are released from the ovaries into the oviducts, where they can be fertilised. This marks the point at which the female becomes gravid and begins the next phase of her reproductive cycle.

Now it’s a case of monitoring her closely over the coming weeks and months and hoping everything continues to progress as planned.

Another clutch laid this morning. This Aru locality green tree python female was paired with one of the highest white males I’ve seen, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what this pairing produces. If all goes to plan, these babies will become an important part of our Aru locality breeding plans for years to come.
