🐾 You can't help but get emotionally invested. ❤️
There are some jobs where you can leave work at the door.
Dog grooming isn't one of them.
You can't help but get emotionally invested.
One minute they're tiny, fluffy puppies arriving for their very first groom. Everything is new... the strange smells, the buzzing clippers, the warm bath, the unfamiliar sounds. You spend time building trust, helping them realise that this isn't something to fear. Watching their confidence grow is one of the greatest privileges of my job.
Then the years pass.
Those bouncy puppies become calm adults, and before you know it, they're the older dogs with greying faces, a few more lumps and bumps, a slower walk and a gentler tail wag. We adapt with them. We take things at their pace. We give them a little more time, a little more reassurance, and make sure they're as comfortable as possible. Sometimes all they need is to feel clean, fresh and free from the coat that's weighing them down.
And through it all, I build relationships not just with the dogs, but with the people who love them.
I started building my own little grooming business from home when I was just 18 years old, whilst working full-time in a grooming salon. I could never have imagined that so many families would still be trusting me with their dogs all these years later. Many of my clients have watched me grow too—not just in my skills, but through the different chapters of my own life, watching my family grow alongside my business.
The hardest part of this job is when the message arrives to say they won't be coming back.
Sometimes it's because illness has taken hold. Sometimes it's simply because time has caught up with them. Those messages never get easier. I often find myself looking back through years of photos, remembering the tiny puppy who first walked through my door. I shed tears alongside their owners because, after all those years, they're never "just another dog."
Then, one day, another message arrives...
"We've got a new puppy..."
And I'm reminded what an incredible privilege it is to begin that journey all over again.
To every family who has trusted me with your dogs—whether for one groom or for a lifetime—thank you.
It has been one of the greatest honours of my life to care for your best friends through every stage of their journey. ❤️🐾
