🐾 The importance of getting your pup out with other dogs

Let them learn, let them get things wrong, and let them learn from appropriate corrections from other dogs.

These interactions help build boundaries, resilience and confidence while teaching them to understand canine body language, respect personal space and communicate appropriately.

It's not about letting them do whatever they want; it's about giving them safe opportunities to learn.

We're not just socialising puppies; we're teaching them how to be dogs.🐶❤️

The first thing I had to do with Hugo, AKA Bigfoot, was introduce him to the cats 🐶🐈

He’s never been cat-tested or been around cats before, so I had three main goals:

🐾 STOP the chase before it starts.🐾 Make sure chasing the cats doesn’t become self-rewarding. 🐾 Desensitise the cats to Hugo so they don’t pack their bags and bu**er off to find a new home! 😂

I started by keeping Hugo on a lead. This meant I could prevent any chasing before it even began and keep everyone safe.

Next, I rewarded Hugo whenever he chose to disengage from the cats. The aim was to teach him that ignoring the cats and focusing on me was far more rewarding than chasing them.

And then… I let the cats give him a slap around the face, and job done 🤣🤣

Hugo: 0. Cats: 1.

Hugo’s Training Journey: From Day One

Meet Hugo, my new dog. He is just over five months old and has been with me for six hours.

Over the coming months, I intend to document his training and development, sharing each stage of the process as we progress.

The aim is not simply to demonstrate how to train a dog, but to provide an insight into the principles, decisions, and techniques involved in developing a well-balanced dog. This includes identifying potential problems early, understanding the reasons behind unwanted behaviours, and exploring how to prevent, correct, or minimise them.

By documenting Hugo’s progress from the outset, I hope to demonstrate the importance of consistency, timing, communication, and understanding in dog training.

This will be an ongoing record of the process, including the successes, the challenges, and the lessons learned along the way.

The objective is to provide a realistic insight into dog training as it happens, showing not only what I do, but also why I do it.
