Training your dog isn’t just about teaching commands and obedience. BTW (obedience is an outdated word in the dog training industry and one we don’t promote)

Training helps towards a deeper connection and a healthier, happier life for both of you. Dogs have an innate desire to understand us and be understood, and training is the perfect way to cement this.

Engaging in training sessions enhances the bond between you and your dog. Positive reinforcement techniques build trust and helps communication, so your dog understands you. This connection not only improves Behaviour but also will strengthen the bond between you.

Training provides mental stimulation, keeping your dog’s mind sharp and reducing stress. For owners, the act of training can alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression. Studies show routine and structure can be particularly beneficial for mental well-being.

Regular training sessions often involve physical activity, this can result in better health for both you and your dog. Activities like walking, playing, and practicing commands can improve cardiovascular health, increase energy levels, and contribute to overall well-being.

Early and consistent training helps prevent undesirable behaviours by teaching your dog appropriate responses to various situations. This proactive approach leads to a more harmonious household and a well-adjusted pet.

At Salisbury dog trainers we’re dedicated to helping you and your dog thrive together. Our expert behaviourist Jenni can offer personalised sessions tailored to your dog’s needs. This will help to ensure a positive and effective learning experience. Contact us today to start your journey toward a stronger bond and a healthier, happier life for you and your pawfect companion.

As a dog behaviour professional I will never understand the thought process of many dog owners.

Part of being a dog owner is being responsible. So why is it so many owners allow their dogs to run around off lead in public places?
Now I am not saying that dogs shouldn't be allowed off leads in public places. However if this is the case then should that dog have been trained with the perfect recall?

If your dog is off lead and runs over to people or other dogs ignoring your recall command, is this responsible dog ownership?

Many people are afraid of dogs, many dogs are afraid of dogs. We can't fully comprehend the circumstances of a stranger and their dogs can we?

I have clients contacting me on a regular basis with these concerns, a growing number of these clients are new puppy owners. There can be a list of training requirements but recall is becoming more and more important to socially savvy dog owners.

Teaching bullet proof recall to puppies is fundamentally key to those that have an expectation to allow their dogs off lead time in public areas. This training starts in the home, in the garden and gradually building towards safe areas outside. Then we start to add distractions as they progress. Recall is an ongoing lesson especially for the first 1-2 years of life.

Older pups or dogs can also learn fantastic recall but we just have to use slightly different techniques for dogs that have got used to running over to the distractions.

If you wish for your dog to have amazing recall and learn about the unwritten etiquette rules of responsible dog ownership then please do contact us, Jenni has been teaching this life skill for 28 years so you are in safe hands,

During a puppy training package, there is a need to help a puppy parents with a variety of behaviours.
Some of these include
Puppy biting
Jumping up
Resource guarding
Digging holes
Separation anxiety
Recall
Pulling on lead
Over excitement
Excessive barking

While these are just some of the areas I can help with this list is certainly not complete. Many of the lessons I teach can be used into relation to many behaviours. So what works for one specific problem can be used for others.

To break it down the biggest lessons I can teach you in the early days is

Good communication
Consistency
Engagement
Creating the foundations for a perfect relationship.
Positive reinforcement always wins.

After now 28 years working in this industry I have learned not to over complicate things, for most owners just want easy understandable techniques that stick. Not fancy words, no scientific dog training terms just fun, rewarding learning that helps to create a better understanding.

Here is a clip of a before and after of the lead pulling phase of training. This particular case was an all round training session and the lead pulling was just a small snippet of the overall case. While I considered this as mild pulling the owners needed help as it was becoming frustrating for them.

Like with all dog training it’s a personal choice, I don’t train dogs to be robots I train them to be balanced.
