LOKI - 4 YEAR OLD GSD
Hannah got in touch recently regarding their 4 year old GSD Loki.

They had tried several other trainers in the past but even they couldn’t help to change Loki’s challenging behaviour. They were struggling to even walk him.

This video was taken after 3 previous sessions and this is the point where we introduce food for the first time.

We make training simple but there is more to training your dog than using food. All of these new behaviours were learnt without food first!

LOUIE — 4-YEAR-OLD SPRINGER
Louie really didn’t like having a figure-of-8 lead put on him. He found it extremely aversive. Over time, he formed an association:

LEAD GOES ON = I DON’T WANT TO GO FOR A WALK.

Walks became increasingly difficult.
This video is from Louie’s first session. Steve identifies the problem and then gets to work changing Louie’s association with the equipment …..and here’s the important bit:

There is NO one-size-fits-all approach to dog training. Any piece of equipment can become aversive to an individual dog. What one dog hates, another may happily accept.

We don’t train according to rigid philosophies or beliefs. We train the dog that is actually standing in front of us.

🎾 2 BALL GAME — THE LIGHT SWITCHES ON!
Yesterday I posted about using the 2 Ball Game to teach a dog to release the ball after retrieving it.

Cathy has been practising with Cosmo, an 11 year-old Springer Spaniel, who had spent years stubbornly holding on to the ball and refusing to drop it.

Rather than trying to force the ball out of his mouth, Cathy patiently followed the rules she had been taught and consistently reinforced the right behaviour.

A few weeks later, this is the result.
Cosmo has figured it out. He now understands that dropping the ball makes the game continue. He no longer needs the 2nd ball.

That moment when the dog suddenly makes the connection, is what we’re looking for, it’s like switching the light on!

TWO-BALL GAME — TEACH YOUR DOG TO LET GO!
Does your dog chase the ball, bring it back and then refuse to release it?

Try the Two-Ball Game. The rule is simple:
RELEASE = GAME CONTINUES
HOLD ON = GAME STOPS
Your dog quickly learns that letting go is what makes the fun happen.

It may take a little patience at first, especially if your dog is already in the habit of holding onto the ball. Stick to the rules and celebrate when they get it right!

It’s a simple game that teaches a valuable lesson: the behaviour you want is what makes the reward happen.
