It’s been a busy week at Maws Paws, and after being a bit under the weather, I’m finally all caught up and ready to get back to normal!

A big thank you to everyone for your patience while I’ve rearranged sessions, caught up on notes and worked through messages. I really appreciate it! I don’t think I’ve missed anyone, but if you’re still waiting for anything, please just give me a nudge.

Here’s a little look at some of the lovely dogs I’ve been working with recently.

Mono – Continuing to get back on track with training. Last week we focused on lead walking, and he did really well!

Jude & Cass – Two VERY cute Golden Retriever puppies who have found a fantastic home. We looked at some important foundations to help them settle into their new life together.

Murphy – This handsome Collie had a top-up 1-1 focusing on engagement around other dogs. Adolescence has hit, and he wants to be friends with everyone! He did brilliantly during the session.

Teddy – After a delay in getting the all-clear to head out on walks, we focused on crate confidence, getting some much-needed rest and building up to being left alone.

Buzz & Woody – Two adorable brothers who were found abandoned in a cardboard box but have now landed on their paws in a fantastic home. We worked on engagement around other dogs, and the lovely relationship they’ve already built with their owners really showed.

Ronnie – This adolescent girl finds other dogs VERY exciting, so we worked on turning that initial excitement into a calmer, more focused approach. She did really well, and with her owner’s hopes of working towards becoming a therapy dog, there’s lots to look forward to!

I’ve been rubbish at remembering to take photos, so here’s a very cute baby Teddy alongside brothers Woody and Buzz.

Thanks again for bearing with me this week. It’s lovely to be back on top of things, and I’m looking forward to getting back to normal with everyone 💙

A little glimpse of Indie and Gino doing something they used to do all the time ❤️

These two used to have the BEST relationship, and honestly, it does make me sad that they don’t have that same relationship anymore.

They still live happily together and co-exist perfectly well, but over the last few years Gino’s epilepsy has unfortunately taken its toll on their relationship.

Indie has always been a nervous dog, and when Gino’s seizures were happening roughly monthly, the noise, stress and unpredictability really worried her.

As Gino has got older, things have become even more complicated. The signs he used to show before a seizure — pacing, standing and seeming unsettled — can now also simply be signs of old age. Indie doesn’t know the difference, so those behaviours can still make her worry.

We’ve had to put management in place to make sure both dogs are happy, comfortable and able to thrive. They may not have the relationship they once did, but they can still happily share a home and enjoy their lives together.

And I think this is something that can easily be overlooked in multi-dog households.

Relationships between dogs can be complex, and they can change over time. Sometimes circumstances change, sometimes their needs change, and sometimes we need to put management in place to make sure everyone is happy.

Management isn’t a failure, and it doesn’t necessarily mean dogs don’t get along. Sometimes it’s simply about recognising that things have changed and adapting to support each individual dog.

I’ll always miss seeing these two playing together like they used to, though. ❤️

🐾 Getting older doesn’t mean your dog has to live with pain.

Today, Gino has been for his ketamine booster.

For those who have followed Gino’s journey, you’ll know I’ve spoken quite a bit about his pain and mobility over the years. He’ll be 12 in a few weeks and has arthritis in his spine.

But something I think is really important to remember is that just because our older dogs start to slow down, look stiff or take a little longer to get moving, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s simply “old age”. It can be a sign that they’re in pain.

Gino’s management now includes shorter, more appropriate walks, regular physiotherapy and three different types of pain medication.

And do you know what?

He isn’t looking stiff.

That’s because his pain is being managed and he is comfortable. ❤️

Joint supplements can also play a really useful role in supporting our dogs as they age. Personally, I don’t wait until my dogs are showing signs of discomfort before introducing them. I start joint support from puppyhood, because prevention and maintaining good joint health is something I believe is worth considering throughout their lives.

Of course, supplements aren’t a replacement for veterinary advice or appropriate pain relief when a dog needs it. If your older dog is slowing down, struggling with stairs, reluctant to jump, taking longer to get up, changing their behaviour or simply not seeming quite themselves, please don’t just put it down to getting older.

Pain can be subtle, and our dogs are incredibly good at hiding it.

Please speak to your vet and get your dog the help they need. They don’t have to be in obvious pain for pain management to make a huge difference to their quality of life.

Gino is proof that getting older doesn’t have to mean accepting discomfort as part of the process. 🐾

🐾 Daisy has completed her At Home Puppy Package! 🐾

It has been so lovely working with Daisy and her owners. They have put a lot of work into her training and it has been great to see her progress throughout our sessions.

Daisy really is such a lovely girly, and she has been a pleasure to work with. 💙

Her owners were also incredibly kind and surprised me with a beautiful orchid and a lovely card at our last session. Such a thoughtful thank you and very much appreciated!

I’m looking forward to catching up with them all again soon for a trip to the park. And of course, we’ll have to stop for a coffee and cake along the way to put that settle training to the test! ☕🍰

Well done, Daisy! 🐾

🐾 Ginny has completed her Silver Puppy Package! 🐾

I have really enjoyed working with Ginny and her owners. They have put so much hard work in already, and it really shows in how quickly Ginny is picking things up.

For our final session, before heading out to work on her recall, we introduced targeting her bed. Ginny picked it up so quickly and was straight into the exercise!

It has been lovely watching her confidence and understanding develop throughout her sessions, and I’m looking forward to catching up with Ginny and her owners again soon.

Well done, Ginny! 💙

A HUGE congratulations to Izzie! 🎓🐾

After more than 12 months of working together, I’m so incredibly proud to say that Izzie has officially passed her IMDT exam and is now a qualified dog trainer!

Watching her progress over the last year has been amazing. Not only has her knowledge grown massively, but seeing her confidence develop along the way has been just as rewarding.

Izzie has worked incredibly hard for this, turning up week in, week out, and even giving up her weekends for 1-2-1 sessions alongside working a full-time job. She has also put so much extra time into developing her knowledge through online courses and attending in-person training workshops.

Her dedication and commitment to learning have really paid off, and she should be incredibly proud of what she has achieved.

I’m very excited to see what the future holds for Izzie, and I feel very lucky and honoured to have been a part of her journey so far.

And don’t worry… she isn’t going anywhere! 😜 Hopefully, in the coming months, you may even start seeing Izzie taking some classes for you all.

Please join me in giving her a HUGE congratulations on such a fantastic achievement! 🥳🐶
