We are a Veterinary Hospital offering care to patients not only locally as our Referral Service treats patients nationally. We are happy to help you locally with any queries, advice or support on veterinary services that you may require. Our fully qualified veterinary and nursing staff offer the highest level of medical and surgical skills from our Veterinary Hospital and Referral Centre in St.Helens so you can be assured that your pet will always be well cared for. We have local branch surgeries for your convenience and late night/weekend opening times to help accommodate your busy lives.

🎇 Let's ease dog firework anxiety with these five top tips 👇

🚻 Toilet Time: Try to get your dog to go to the toilet before the fireworks start and keep them indoors during the displays

🍽️💧 Food & Water Access: For dogs that struggle to eat when stressed, ensure they have access to food and water all night. If you know when the worst nights for fireworks will be, feed your dog late afternoon or early evening before the noise begins

🔒 Secure Your Home: Make sure your home is secure by closing all doors and windows, as scared pets can sometimes bolt. Close curtains and blinds to minimise flashes

🎶 Create Background Noise: Play moderately loud rhythmic music with a good beat to help mask the sound of fireworks. Alternatively, familiar sounds like the TV may also comfort your dog

🐕‍🦺 Prevent Trapping: Ensure your dog cannot get trapped, as this may worsen their phobias. Avoid shutting them in tight spaces

Traditionally this time of year there are a lot of bonfires, and not always on November 5th! 🎇

Check there’s no wildlife taking shelter in it before lighting e.g. hedgehogs 🦔

If you have one in your garden, PLEASE make sure it is completely out, especially before letting pets anywhere near the area.

Unsuspecting animals (wild or pet) can run over any embers, which may still be hot, and get burnt feet 🐾

Pet obesity increases the risk of conditions such as;

💊 high blood pressure
💊 heart / respiratory diseases

Certain breeds and ages of pets can be more prone to obesity and its important to monitor and record weight and condition regularly 📖

Simple ways to prevent obesity include;
🥎 increasing exercise
🥎 active play
🥩 assess their diet - you can speak to a member of the veterinary team to discuss and formulate a personalised, appropriate feeding plan

✨ encourage your older pets to do more frequent, low volume exercise
✨ ensure you are feeding your pet the correct food and they are getting adequate nutrition
✨ regularly check your pets hygiene and groom them - mobility can decrease, meaning they are unable to take sufficient care of their coats
✨ assess your pets toileting abilities - cats may require lower sided litter trays for ease
✨ monitor your pets behaviour - behavioural changes may indicate pain or illness and may require a vet visit for thorough assessment
