🍂🐾 Autumn Hazards for Pets 🐾🍂

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but as the leaves start to fall and the nights draw in, there are a few seasonal hazards pet owners should be aware of!

🍄 Fungi & mushrooms
Some wild mushrooms can be poisonous to pets. Keep curious noses away from fungi when out on walks and contact your vet if you think your pet has eaten one.

🌰 Conkers & acorns
These can cause stomach upset and, if swallowed, may lead to choking or intestinal blockages. Try to prevent your pet from chewing or eating them.

🍂 Fallen leaves
Piles of damp leaves can hide sharp objects, fungi and other hazards. They can also harbour bacteria and parasites.

🕯️ Candles & open fires
With the cooler evenings, candles, heaters and fires become more common. Never leave pets unattended around flames or hot surfaces.

🎃 Halloween hazards
Chocolate, sweets, decorations and certain foods can all be dangerous to pets. Keep treats well out of reach and make sure pets have a quiet, safe space away from the Halloween excitement.

🌧️ Darker & wetter walks
As daylight hours decrease, make sure you and your pet can be seen. Reflective collars, leads, coats or lights can help keep you both visible.

🦔 Wildlife encounters
Autumn brings increased wildlife activity. Keep an eye on your pet when exploring gardens, parks and woodland areas.

🐶 And don't forget those muddy paws!
Wipe your pet's paws after walks to remove things like grit and anything else they may have picked up along the way.

If you think your pet has eaten something potentially poisonous or harmful, contact your vet as soon as possible. Don't wait for symptoms to appear.

🎆🐾 FIREWORK NIGHT & YOUR PETS 🐾🎆

Firework season can be a frightening time for our pets. The loud bangs, flashes and unfamiliar noises can cause stress and anxiety — but there are things you can do to help them feel safe. ❤️

🏠 Create a safe space
Set up a quiet, cosy area where your pet can retreat. Add their favourite bed, blankets and toys. You may want to use things like Adaptil calming sprays or diffusers.

🎵 Mask the noise
Close windows and curtains and put the TV, radio or calming music on to help muffle the sound of fireworks.

🐕 Walk before dark
Try to take dogs out earlier in the evening, before fireworks are likely to start. Keep dogs securely on their leads.

🐱 Keep cats indoors
Make sure cats are safely inside before the fireworks begin and provide plenty of hiding places.

🫶 Stay calm
Your pet may look to you for reassurance. Stay relaxed and allow them to hide or stay close to you if they want to.

🚪 Keep doors and windows secure
A frightened pet may try to escape, so take extra care when opening doors.

🍫 Keep treats and food safely away
Remember that chocolate, sweets and alcohol can be dangerous to pets, so keep Halloween and Bonfire Night treats out of reach.

💊 Worried about your pet's anxiety?
If your pet becomes extremely frightened during fireworks, speak to your veterinary team before firework season. There may be ways we can help make the experience less stressful such as medication that reduces anxiety.

We are super excited to announce that we have achieved our Silver award for Investors or the Environment!

As you know, last year we achieved our Bronze award for IIE. However we have been working hard as a team over the last year to ensure we are meeting our new targets to improve our impact on the environment even more.

One of our nurses, Charlotte is our green champion and has been responsible for driving our team to achieve this. Charlotte has worked incredibly hard to ensure we were set up in the practice for making these environmentally friendly changes and made sure our team all knew what needed to be done to meet the criteria.

Well done team Bold!! 💚

🐾🚨 PARVOVIRUS ALERT – PLEASE PROTECT YOUR PET 🚨🐾

We are seeing increasing numbers of parvovirus cases in both dogs and cats, with a particular concern recently around feline parvovirus (feline panleukopenia).

Feline parvovirus is highly contagious and potentially fatal, particularly in kittens and unvaccinated cats. A recent report in Veterinary Record highlighted an increase in feline panleukopenia cases in the UK.

🦠 What are the signs to look out for?

Symptoms can include:
🐱 Vomiting
🐱 Diarrhoea, sometimes bloody
🐱 Loss of appetite
🐱 Extreme tiredness or weakness
🐱 Fever
🐱 Abdominal pain

In dogs, parvovirus can cause similar severe gastrointestinal disease and can become life-threatening very quickly.

💉 VACCINATION IS THE BEST PROTECTION

The good news is that vaccination provides vital protection against parvovirus. Keeping your pet's vaccinations up to date is one of the most important things you can do to help protect them.

Parvovirus is extremely contagious and can spread between animals through contaminated faeces and contaminated environments. If you suspect your pet may have parvovirus, please contact your vet immediately and let them know before arriving at the practice so we can take appropriate infection-control precautions.

If your pet is vomiting, has diarrhoea or suddenly becomes very lethargic, don't wait — contact your vet immediately 🐾
