Each year on the last Sunday of October the clocks in the little rehoming centre go back an hour. For most people , that means an extra hour in bed but for the cats it means breakfast confusion.
At exactly 8 o'clock, according to their stomachs, every cat in the cattery began their usual morning chorus.
"MROW!"
"MEEEOOW!"
"NOW!"
The staff opened the centre that morning, laughed as they walked through the building carrying a tray of food.
"You've all forgotten about Daylight Saving Time, haven't you?"
The cats were unimpressed.
A black and white boy named Syrup threw himself dramatically against the pen door.
Two tiny black kittens called Creepers and Peepers climbed to the highest point and complained as loudly as possible.
And an elderly tortoiseshell named Hare looked at the staff as though they had committed a serious crime.
"Breakfast is in an hour" the staff explained.
The cats responded with a united howl.
Five minutes later, they were fed anyway.
Some battles simply weren't worth fighting.
As the morning settled down, visitors began arriving to meet the cats looking for new homes.
The shorter autumn days always made the cattery feel different. Outside the trees were turning gold and copper. The air smelled of fallen leaves. Darkness came earlier each evening, and many of the cats curled up in warm fleece beds long before supper.
Among them was a large black cat named Kobe. Kobe had been struggling to find the right home.
This year before the last Sunday of October could you be the one for Kobe or any other of our beautiful souls wishing to be in a home before the clocks go back so they can wake you up early. π½
