Didn’t realise how many things contain xylitol which is dangerous for dogs

Tonight I ended up trying to help a friend whose puppy ate a kid's vitamin containing xylitol. Simple accident: kid dropped vitamin, puppy scarfed it down. (Note: this household is knowledgeable and is xylitol free, but a relative bought the vitamins, unaware of the risk to the dogs.)

The puppy only ate *one* vitamin. Which turned out to contain 1500 mg of xylitol.

100 mg/kg is the threshold for hypoglycemia which can be fatal. At 500 mg/kg, hepatic necrosis occurs -- destruction of liver tissue.

So just ONE chewable vitamin ended up creating a serious problem for a 30 pound pup (which is not quite 14 kg).

The emergency vet induced vomiting. Thankfully, the puppy had had a meal and so there was food in her stomach. In the vomit was the orange tablet, identifiable though dissolved.

Quick thinking on the owner's part (including grabbing the bottle of vitamins) and fortunately a nearby 24/7 emergency vet hospital meant that this pup received prompt treatment, and should make a full recovery.

Check your medications, vitamins, gum, candy, toothpaste, mouthwash, peanut butter and more for xylitol, also known as birch sugar.

This is useful information to have on hand:

ALWAYS contact vet and ASPCA Animal Poison Control center immediately!

As for everyone (the non-vets) recommending the use of hydrogen peroxide, please update your understanding:

Pass this along. I hope you never have to use it.

Last weekend my 3 year old Ronnie was very ill and at Beacon VetCare for a few days. He wasn’t eating, had no energy and was almost shutting down. A week later and he’s back to his thieving, naught delinquent ways thanks to the vets who spotted Addisons disease and are now treating him with steroids and monthly injections.

She looks out from behind her kennel door… waiting 💔

Tyger is a bright, lively girl with so much love to give, but here, in the noise and stress of kennel life, it’s hard for her to show it. All that energy, all that personality… with nowhere to go.

She watches people pass, hoping someone will stop. Hoping someone will see beyond the kennel bars and notice the clever, affectionate girl inside. But they keep walking.

She even went along to our Paws on the Beach event, hoping that might be her moment. She sat so nicely, being such a good girl, waiting for someone to notice her… but no one did 😔

Tyger isn’t “too much”, she just hasn’t had the chance to be understood yet. She’s intelligent, eager to learn, and would do anything for a treat and a bit of guidance. She needs someone who will take the time to train her, to channel her energy, and to show her what the world can really be like.

Yes, she’s lively. Yes, she gets excited. But she also melts into cuddles, craving closeness and comfort. She just wants her person, someone to help her feel safe, settled, and finally home.

Our team try to give her as much love as possible, but it’s not the same as having a warm home, a family, and a cosy, safe bed to snuggle into at the end of the day.

Right now, she’s stuck waiting. Waiting for someone patient. Someone kind. Someone who won’t overlook her.

🐾 Please don’t let her grow up behind kennel doors. Could you be the one to give Tyger the chance she’s been waiting for? 💛

If you think you could offer Tyger the home she deserves, please click the link attached to find out more or apply:

Pancreatitis in dogs… my 14 year old has it and I’m continually learning so thought I’d share the latest…. She’s been on butchers sensitive as it says 4.5% fat which is lower than the recommended 8/10% fat limit. But this is measured with the moisture and if you remove moisture it becomes way over 10% fat. Which is why I think my dog has been uncomfortable and whining. Now on royal canin low fat gastrointestinal which is 1.7% fat and she seems comfortable and not whining.

VOLUNTEERS

We have tried to contact all volunteers that have put in applications to volunteer at our centre. There are some that we haven’t been able to reach. If this includes you, please do call us or drop us an email.

We still require some volunteers to work directly with the dogs and a few to help out in our reception, helping to answers the phones and meet visitors.

Training is currently being undertaken in both areas so please do get in touch so we can include you. As you can see, Hunter, in the photo, was being trained to answer the phones. Can you be as good as Hunter???😂

If you haven’t already applied to volunteer, we still want to hear from you.

The application form can be found by clicking on this link https://stfrancisnewquay.org.uk/volunteering/
