Did you know today (4th September) is National Wildlife Day? a day to celebrate all the wild neighbours we share our planet with. But guess what, you actually don’t need to travel far to experience or help wildlife.
We are really lucky here in St Albans with lots of areas around us such as Heartwood Forest, Verulamium Park and the Jersey Farm Woodland Park, to name just a few. We’ve also listed a couple of easy ways to support our local wildlife.
1) Keep dogs on a lead in wildlife rich areas and avoid disturbing nests, dens and resting animals.
2) Plant native, pet‑safe flowers and shrubs to give pollinators and birds food and shelter.
3) If you have space to, leave a wild corner in the garden such as longer grass, leaf and log piles for insects and amphibians.
4) Avoid pesticides and chemical treatments that can harm wildlife (and your pets)
5) Leave a little dish of water in your garden especially in hot weather or even make a bug hotel which is fun for the kids to do too!
We have a lovely selection of wildlife suitable nuts and seeds in store so do pop in if you need a little something to help our wildlife thrive.
