A few weeks ago I was asked to help with some loading practice for this beautiful little Spanish horse.
When we first met, he was quite nervous and reluctant to walk up the ramp. We took everything at his pace, using gentle pressure and release, along with forward and backward steps to build trust, connection and confidence.
On our first session he loaded around five times. He was understandably unsure to begin with, but each attempt was a little better than the last. Once he was settled inside, we started introducing the partition, but only closed it halfway. He showed signs of feeling claustrophobic, so we listened to him. There was no need to rush or risk losing the trust and confidence we’d worked so hard to build.
Two weeks later we met again, and what a transformation!
He walked straight up the ramp the first time and was much more relaxed inside the horsebox. When it was time to unload, he turned carefully, lowered his head and walked calmly down the ramp. We repeated this several times, and with each attempt his confidence continued to grow.
This time he was happy for us to close the partition completely, as he was giving us all the right signs that he was ready. We haven’t introduced the ramp or rear door being closed just yet, but with a little more confidence-building I’m sure he’ll get there.
It’s so rewarding to work with both horses and owners at their own pace. Building confidence and trust can’t be rushed, and every horse is an individual. Watching them grow in confidence is one of the best parts of the job. 🐴❤️
