A genuine question, and I'd really love to hear what people think.
Are we reaching a point where the cost of owning and caring for animals is becoming unsustainable for ordinary people? The cost of pet insurance, vet treatment, food, and everything else seems to keep rising. There are real costs involved, of course, but at what point does affordability become a bigger issue? If people can't afford insurance or unexpected vet bills, what happens to the animals? Could we see more surrendered pets, more strain on shelters, and people deciding they can't take that risk again? And if fewer people own animals long term, could that have a knock on effect on the wider animal industry? Food, grooming, toys, stabling , boarding, walking, and everything that relies on people having animals. Is this a much bigger question about sustainability for the whole ecosystem? Where's the balance between businesses making a reasonable profit and keeping animal care affordable enough for people? I'd genuinely love to know what others think.
