Rescue is very close to my heart, and a large part of why I do what I do. Let's use to shine a light on the many ways you can help by sharing this post.
Go follow your local rescue or a national rescue if you don't already. Other than suggesting how you can help, I also want to highlight the incredible work done by 3 amazing rescues: Midlands Dog Rescue, Wellidog and Team Ilbrey K9 Partners. Because I tell you, the people who work in rescue are absolute heroes.
🐾 Team Ilbrey K9 Partners
My own dog, Delilah, is a rescue dog from Team Ilbrey K9 Partners, who do fantastic work supporting bull breeds and other large breeds across the UK. She's a result of irresponsible breeding, and her litter was brought into the rescue when they were only 5 weeks old (without mum). After some time in foster care, she was adopted. Sadly, that didn't work out, so she was put back into another foster home, before finally winding up with me at 7 months old. And it's been a journey since! Not one I want to go into here, and whilst I love Delilah and couldn't imagine my life without her, her story shouldn't have happened. But, it did, and thanks to Team Ilbrey K9 Partners, Delilah and her siblings all ended up in loving homes.
🐾 Midlands Dog Rescue
They're a very small team yet having a ginormous impact on so many dogs lives. They're a Northamptonshire based rescue, but rehome nationally. I've worked closely with them doing home checks and helped with fostering, and I've seen firsthand how tirelessly they work (round the clock) to get as many dogs from the council pound to safety and into homes. They also provide incredible support to those who adopt from them, and are always on hand. If I'm honest, I don't know how they do all this.
🐾 Wellidog
Although I've known about Wellidog for years, I've only started being involved with them more recently. Like the other rescues mentioned here, they also work tirelessly to support the dogs in their care and find them forever homes. I first met Vicki when she brought Ted, a young staffy who has been returned to them a couple of times, to do scentwork with me. She wanted (still do!) to give him the best chance possible of finding a forever home for him. He's been doing sessions for the last couple of months, and it's fantastic to watch his progress and how he's becoming increasingly focused and decreasingly frustrated. I've also had the pleasure of meeting other dogs in their care, such as Connie, an American Bulldog cross who's been in rescue for far, far too long. What is evident is they don't give up on any of their dogs, and go above and beyond for the dogs in their care.
If you've read this far, thank you - it means a lot. I hope some of the ways to help rescues have inspired you. Let me know any stories with rescues that you have in the comments, or tag a rescue that you know and share they they're amazing.
