We spend so much time working around a cat's face, but how many of us truly understand what whiskers do?
Whiskers (or vibrissae) are not just thicker hairs. They are ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐๐๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฌ deeply connected to a large follicle packed with ๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ. When a whisker bends, touches an object, or detects changes in airflow, that ๐ข๐ง๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ญ'๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง, helping them interpret their surroundings. ๏ฟผ

The facial whiskers aren't the only sensory hairs a cat has. Cats also have specialized sensory hairs above the ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฌ, on ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ง, on the ๐๐๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ข๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ฌ (carpal whiskers), and ๐ฌ๐๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ parts of the coat. Some mother cats are known to chew or shorten their kittens' whiskers. It's thought this may help discourage adventurous kittens from wandering too far while they're still developing.

Whiskers naturally shed and regrow, but they can also become broken or worn. A common cause is repeated rubbing against the doors or sides of cat carriers during travel, leaving whiskers looking uneven or shortened.
