A useful link for horse owners in light of the recent increase in cases of Equine Influenza in the UK.

‼️Equine Influenza Information‼️

There have recently been multiple cases reported in our area, mostly in new arrivals and unvaccinated horses.

It’s a good reminder to practice routine yard biosecurity, especially in isolating new arrivals. Stay vigilant whilst out and about competing, making sure there is no contact between horses or sharing of equipment.

Monitor your horses and contact us if you notice any signs of respiratory disease, especially with a high temperature. Clinical signs of Equine Influenza include:

🔴Fever >38.5c
🔴Loss of appetite
🔴Coughing
🔴Nasal discharge

🔹Reminder🔹
Vaccination will help protect your horses and ponies - check your vaccination dates to ensure they are in date. In some cases, vaccinating more frequently may be advised, such as yards with high stocking densities, lots of new arrivals or frequent movements to show. Feel free to chat to a vet at either of our clinics to discuss whether this may be appropriate for your horse, or if you have any concerns that your horse may be unwell.

🧑‍⚖️ Veterinary Reforms 🧑‍⚖️

🐾 You will probably have seen many stories in the press in the last few weeks as well as a BBC Panorama documentary on the increased costs of Veterinary Care.

🐾 After a Competition and Markets Authority investigation, the government yesterday announced that they are launching a consultation into reforms of the Veterinary industry. At Towcester Vets we welcome the consultation and hope the suggested proposals will be good for the industry as a whole and more importantly the welfare of our pets.

🐾 Some of the proposals that have been suggested include:

🔻 Practices being required to make it clear whether they are part of a large corporate group. Towcester Vets is independently owned by local veterinary surgeons who all work within the clinics, Cat, Jen and Helena from the small animal team, Andy and Mike from Equine and Gareth from the farm team.

🔻 Practices being required to publish price lists for common procedures and inform clients of costs involved. At Towcester Vets our price lists are already available on our website or upon request in person, over the telephone or by email. We are happy to provide estimates and offer a range of treatment options.

🔻 Increased regulation of veterinary nurses including increased independence and regulation for paraprofessionals. The profession has long been campaigning for both the title of Veterinary Nurse to be protected so that only Registered Veterinary nurses can use it and for the list of procedures they can undertake to be expanded, so if those are included in the reforms we will be delighted!

🔻 Other suggestions such as requiring licenses to practice and following an industry wide complaints system we will obviously comply with as they are introduced. Our current complaints policy can be found within our T&Cs here: https://towcester-vets.co.uk/terms-conditions/

🐾 As discussed recently the restrictions on us regarding where we can source medications and which medications we can supply under the cascade system does impact the cost of medications. We would love to see these considered for reform.

🐾 It is also worth noting that currently VAT at 20% is added to vet fees as they are not considered to be an essential service unlike human healthcare. It will be interesting to see if this changes with the government's current stance.

🐾 At Towcester Vets we are confident that our prices are fair and we are very proud to be able to offer our clients an out of hours service and many advanced procedures at our clinics which allows more clients to avoid larger emergency or referral bills.
