We’ve had a super busy summer and hope all our lovely clients have enjoyed their walkies and visits as much as we’ve enjoyed seeing them! 🥰 Thank you as always for keeping us so busy!

Now we’re ready for some autumnal weather… although we’re not quite as excited about the inevitable mud! 😂🍂🐾

🐾🐾Should children offer dog-walking services?🐾🐾

Understanding risks, responsibilities, and legal penalties
Every school holiday brings the same posts and questions: “I have some time off school, and I can help you by walking your dog for £5 an hour.” While this may seem like a harmless opportunity for children to earn some pocket money, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and responsibilities involved.

Dog-walking is not just about enjoying time outdoors with animals. Children need to be insured, able to physically handle the dog, possess a basic understanding of canine behaviour, and know how to administer first-aid in the event of an accident. Without these essentials, both the child and the dog could be placed in unsafe situations.

Legally, children cannot sign contracts or hold Public Liability Insurance in the UK. If a dog causes injury or property damage while being walked by a child, the parent or guardian is legally accountable. Those responsible for children under the age of 16 must ensure the animal’s welfare, and the adult owner remains liable for any harm or damage caused by the dog.

Legal implications under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, both owners and those in charge of a dog can face severe legal consequences if the animal is dangerously out of control in a public place. Penalties depend on the severity of the incident:
• Injury to a person: up to 5 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
• Injury to an assistance dog: up to 3 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
• Death caused by a dog: up to 14 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.
• No injury (dangerously out of control): up to 6 months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.

Parents, guardians, and young people should carefully consider these legal risks and responsibilities before agreeing to walk dogs for others. It is always worth checking local regulations, ensuring adequate supervision, and prioritising safety for both the child and the animal.

Dog-walking is a serious business as you are putting your beloved dog in the care of someone else; you should be insisting on insurance, experience, ethical methods etc.

I love to see children and dogs interacting in the right way, but we do need to be safe. If your child wants to walk dogs, you need to go with them as a responsible parent.

💔With the kind permission of Digby’s wonderful family, I wanted to share some very sad news in the hope that it raises awareness for other dog owners and helps others recognise the signs of a condition that can be incredibly difficult to spot.💔

🐶Sadly, last week Digby was diagnosed with bone cancer, after suddenly becoming lame and uncomfortable on his front leg. To give him the very best chance his owners made the incredibly difficult decision to go ahead with a limb amputation. This has been an emotional and heartbreaking time for all involved.🐶

💙Digby has been a much loved member of the Angie’s Pet Services family for many years and he is the sweetest, gentlest boy who is loved by everyone who has the pleasure of meeting him 💙

💜We wanted to share Digbys story to raise awareness, bone cancer is one of the more common cancers seen in larger breeds of dogs, although it can affect dogs of any size. One of the earliest signs to look out for is a persistent limp that doesn’t improve with rest and because it can be mistaken for arthritis or a strain it is important not to ignore it.💜

Some signs to look out for include:

🐾 A persistent or worsening limp

🐾Swelling on a leg or joint

🐾Pain or reluctance to have the affected leg touched

🐾Reluctance to go on walks, jump or exercise as usual

🐾Lethargy and behaviour changes

💕Of course these symptoms don’t always mean cancer but they should always be assessed by your vet especially if they worsen or persist. 💕

🐶One positive note to take away from this is that although an amputation can feel overwhelming to us, most dogs cope and adapt remarkably well to life on three legs. They often return to enjoying walks, playing and spending precious time with their families on walks much sooner than we expect. 🐶

💚Please always trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem quite right with your dog, don’t be afraid to have it checked out. Early investigation really can make all the difference.💚

🤎Please join me in sending lots of love to Digby and his family as they begin this new chapter. We’re all rooting for you Digby 🤎

💕And that’s another week of walkies completed at Angie’s Pet Services! 🐾

🐶 This week was super wet and muddy, but that’s all part of the fun! 💙

🪴At the end of each week, I carry out a full deep clean of my van to ensure it stays safe, clean, and comfortable for all of my furry passengers. This includes completely emptying the van, washing all bedding, and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting bowls, leads, and toys. 🧸

🧼 I also vacuum the crates, seats, and floors, clean the interior fabrics, and disinfect each crate before allowing them to dry fully. Fresh, clean bedding is then added, ready for the next adventures. 🛌

🥣 Water bowls are cleaned and replenished with fresh water every day, and I always keep a supply of fresh, fluffy towels on hand—especially during weeks like this one when the mud seems determined to come home with us! 🥰

💜Keeping everything clean, hygienic, and comfortable is all part of the service at Angie’s Pet Services. ❤️🐶🐾
